BRIDGEWATER, WASHINGTON AND LEE WIN GUILFORD COLLEGE
CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL TEAM TITLES

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Molly Smith captured the Guilford College Cross Country Carnival women’s race and helped Bridgewater College win the team title Saturday. The Eagles’ Jordan White won the men’s race, but Washington and Lee University placed five runners among the top-nine finishers to take the men’s team championship.

The races highlighted the first invitational meets contested on Guilford’s Meadows Course, located on the northern border of the campus. Guilford will host three meets on the refurbished course, including the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional Championships in November.

Smith completed the six-kilometer course in 24:34.7, nearly 14 seconds in front of Wingate University’s Brittany Vish in the 70-runner field. Smith’s teammate, Samantha Hancock, followed in third place at 25:02.4. Catholic University’s Remy Ball (25:14.1) and Katie Sacker (25:59.5) rounded out the top five and helped the Cardinals to a strong second-place finish, just two points behind Bridgewater. Wingate, which placed four runners in the top 10, finished third in the nine-team field with 49 points.

White edged teammate Jake Griffin by a shade over three seconds to capture the eight-kilometer men’s race, which featured 75 runners. White hit the tape in 27:11.3, while Griffin finished in 27:14.5. Joseph Susek led Washington and Lee’s convincing win with a third-place effort in 27:22.6. He was followed by teammate Harrison Tucker (27:34.1) and Wingate’s Tesform Mehari (27:36.3).

Meet host Guilford placed fifth in the men’s team standings thanks to a 13th-place finish by rookie Richard Rogers (28:10.4). The Quakers’ women did not score, but Linnea Saby led Guilford’s four runners with a time of 28:53.3.

Guilford hosts the Quaker Invitational Oct. 17 on The Meadows Course.

Concord High School won the five-team boys’ five-kilometer race. David Cason, a student at West Forsyth High School and the son of Guilford director of track operations Bill Cason, took the individual title in a time of 17:53.8.

Greensboro Day School placed three runners in the top seven of the girls’ five-kilometer race, which was won by Samantha Sawyer (unattached) in 21:27.5.
