The Guilford College Quakers fell hard as they dropped their home-opener on their brand-new truf field last night and it wasn’t a pretty sight, but here’s hoping they can turn it around in the next couple of weeks.
The defense wasn’t playing bad, but as is the case in many instances, they were on the turf way too long last evening on that Herb Appenzeller Field inside the Armfield Athletic Center on the Quaker campus.
We mentioned it wasn’t a pretty sight, but the crowd was decent and we took a number of pictures and we should have them up here later today or early Monday for your vewing pleasure or anguish.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Mario Huffman recovered three fumbles and Anthony Squillini made nine catches for a school-record 174 yards in visiting Averett University’s 28-3 nonconference football win at Guilford College Saturday night.
The Cougars’ (1-1) defense forced five Guilford (0-3) turnovers and held the Quakers to 228 total offensive yards.
Averett’s Brian Daniels ran for two short touchdowns, including a two-yard score with 2:02 left in the first half that opened the game’s scoring. His one-yard run with 24 seconds left provided the final margin. It also capped a scoring drive set up by one of three Cougars’ recoveries of punt returns muffed by Guilford.
Brad Scott’s third-quarter field goal made it a 7-3 game and capped a nine-play drive, the Quakers’ longest of the game. In addition to forcing five turnovers, the Averett defense limited Guilford to two-of-15 on third-down conversions.
Averett quarterback Cody Ladutko completed 17-of-36 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns in his first college start. He replaced junior Phil Kwiatkowski, who was injured in Averett’s season opener. Nine of his passes went to Squillini, including a 64-yard catch-and-run shortly after Scott’s field goal pulled Guilford to within 7-3. His 11-yard scoring toss to Steve Oristian capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive midway through the fourth quarter that effectively put the game out of reach.
Huffman recorded four tackles in addition to school-record is three fumble recoveries, two of which came off of muffed punt returns. Zane Cooper made a team-high 12 stops and intercepted Guilford quarterback Billy Watkins in the fourth quarter.
The Quakers’ Richie Paul and Trey Billian shared game-high tackles with 14 apiece. Justin Parker paced Guilford’s offense with 117 all-purpose yards (65 rushing, 52 receiving).
Guilford opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference play next Saturday (9/26) versus Hampden-Sydney College at 7:00 p.m.
