“Go-to guy” Gomez from Guilford AOTW again

GOMEZ COLLECTS SECOND GUILFORD STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK AWARD

Greensboro, N.C. — Freshman Freddy Gomez (Burlington, N.C./Williams) of the men’s soccer team earned his second Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week Award of the year Monday. The prize is presented weekly by Guilford’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Gomez scored three goals and had an assist in the Quakers’ 2-1 week. A 5-6, 145-pound midfielder/forward, he scored a goal and an assist in the Quakers’ win on Sept. 16 against Ferrum College. He tallied four points on two goals in Guilford’s win against conference-foe Randolph-Macon College Sept. 18. Gomez has 17 points this season on seven goals and three assists. He leads the team in all three categories.

Coach Jeff Bateson’s Quakers are off to a 5-3-1 start, the program’s best since 2004 when Guilford opened with a 5-3-3 record. Guilford returns to action Wednesday (9/23) at Methodist University at 4 p.m.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among the school’s student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive, and the start of a new program, Champs Life Skills, maintains intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the campus educational program and the student-athlete as an integral part of the student body. Its aim is to increase student-athletes community involvement, as well as engage the Guilford community with the athletic department.
