Basketball recruiting analyst Dave Telep had plenty to see as the Greensboro Day School Bengals were going through their 4-man workouts this afternoon in the Dillard Athletic Center on Lawndale Drive.

Mr. Telep and several college coaches got a good look at the upcoming 2009/2010 Bengals basketball team as they went through many of their pre-season drills under the direction of Steve Shelton, Jeff Smith and Robert Johnson.

Inside drills for the big men with Coach Smith in charge, pushing his men hard with their backs to the basket as they worked and pushed for position in the post. The Bengals will have some real size this year with a front line that can feature 6’10” Jaleel Roberts, 6’7” Jordan Robertson and 6’7” Quayshad Williams.

Roberts and Robertson are juniors and Williams is a sophomore. Wake Forest, N.C. State and Auburn are watching Roberts and Elon, HPU, and several Ivy League schools are taking long looks at Robertson. No track record for Williams yet…..

Greensboro Day will loaded with an assortment of guards and coaches Shelton and Robert Johnson were giving the outside men in the four-man groups plenty to work on this afternoon.

The GDS backcourt could be comprised of Christian Pulliam or Brandon Dorsett at the point, Lucas Weavil would be your automatic two-guard(SG) and he can be spelled quickly by Robert Kleinman. Pulliam and Dorsett have been around for a long time and they know what they are doing. Pulliam is more of a set-up man and Dorsett likes to let it rip and run, he turns up the pace and likes to take a high dribble to the basket with his left side being just as good as his right.

Weavil has been fighting a bit of the injury bug, but he is the best pure outside shooter on the team. Kleinman was the biggest surprise as he can go to the hole and he is very confident with his outside shot and not having seen him before, we found out today, that he will be a primary factor in what the Bengals will be doing this season. Kleinman has It, and It is talent.

Like we said earlier, Weavil is one of your best outside shooters in the area and if the Bengals decide to go smaller and use the three guard system, they have 6’3 John Terry who can push the ball to the basket and he is a very strong rebounding guard.

The Bengals will have many options when they set their offense and decide on a startng lineup, but they will probably use at least nine players, so it doesn’t matter who starts, it matters the most who is there at the finish of the key games; like the Pizza Hut Finals, The ORMA games, and the High Point Wesleyan contests…….

Luke Thomas was not at the workouts today, he has been sick, but he will be part of the regular rotation, his outside shooting touch is golden as he checks in from High Point Central, while Williams comes over from Eastern Guilford.

The nine-man rotation should include Roberts, Robertson, Williams, Pulliam, Weavil, Dorsett, Kleinman, Terry and Thomas and we may see this group grow to ten…..

You can go with Pulliam, Dorsett, Weavil, Roberts, Robertson or Roberts, Robertson, Williams, Pulliam and Weavil or Williams, Roberts, Pulliam, Weavil and Kleinman and so on if you see what I mean. You definitely have depth here…..

Among the guards that are looking at post-graduate possibilities, you have Dorsett with Mercer and UNC-Asheville on his radar. Columbia, HPU and Elon are watching Weavil closely; in fact Justin Gainey, GDS and N.C. State-grad, was there today representing Elon….Christian Pulliam is being pursued by several Ivy League schools and Kleinman is also on the Watch List of most of the Ivy League schools…….

There’s an early look at your Greensboro Day School Bengals and I’m sure Dave Telep will have plenty to add when he begins to analyze this team. I have a feeling that Telep will have a lot to tell us about the GDS big men…….

If you have something to add let us know and if you have some news on your team, give us a yell…….
