“Go to Guy” Gomez at it again for Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C.Rookies Freddy Gomez (Burlington, N.C.) and Ronny Castellanos (Lexington, N.C.) both scored a goal and an assist to lead Guilford College’s men’s soccer team to a 4-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over visiting Bridgewater College Saturday afternoon.

The Quakers (7-3-1, 2-0 ODAC) won for the fifth time in six games. Bridgewater falls to 1-9 (0-3 ODAC). After a scoreless first half, Jeff Floyd got the Quakers on the board off an assist from Gomez in the 47th minute. Midway through the frame Castellanos scored from close range off a Chris Day assist for a 2-0 Guilford edge.

Gomez added his team-leading ninth goal of the seasonin the 82nd minute off a Castellanos feed. Hugh Griffis closed out theQuakers’ scoring two minutes later. Ryan Morgan scored for Bridgewater with 1:10 to play. Jack Bottoms made 10 saves for the Eagles in goal. Guilford’s Jonathan Shine earned the shutout with two stops.

The Quakers are back in action Tuesday 9(/29) at league-rival Washington and Lee University.
