Greensboro College second and Guilford third at GC Invitational

WALLBURG, N.C. – Medalist Josh Speight shot his second straight 69 and led Methodist University to the 2009 Greensboro College Golf Invitational title Tuesday at the Meadowlands Golf Club. The Monarchs shot a second-round 289 and finished with a one-under-par 575(286-289).

Tournament host Greensboro College placed second in the 13-team field at 591. Playing its fifth round in as many days, Guilford’s golf team shot 291 Tuesday and moved up two spots to finish third, 17 strokes behind Methodist. Quakers’ senior Peter Latimer shot two-over-par 146 and placed 10th individually. Classmate Brian Creghan fired Tuesday’s low round (69) and climbed into a share of 13th place with teammate J.T.Thomas at 147.

Guilford, ranked ninth in the current Nike/Golf World Division IIICoaches’ Poll, returns to action Oct. 12-13 at the Davidson CollegeInvitational.

The Pride’s Brock Elder (Greensboro, NC/Vandalia Christian) was runnerup with a 72-69–141 score, three strokes behind Speight. Results

Host Greensboro College’s two-day 591 (292-299) held off Oglethorpe (298-294) and fast charging Guilford (301-291) by one stroke for team runnerup honors. Cape Fear Community College placed fifth with 595 total.

Individually, OU’s Matthew Rebitch (70-72) and Methodist’s Alex Weir (70-72) tied for third with 142, minus two totals. Greensboro’s Ben Nihart placed fifth and was the only other player to card a below-par score (69-74–143, minus one).

Greensboro College returns to action this weekend at Randolph Macon’s Ted Keller Invitational in Richmond, Va.
