We have a winner out on Friendly Avenue: Guilford over Southern Virginia, 48-6

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Jordan Nelson (Hudson, N.C./WestCaldwell) tied a school record with three interceptions and teammate Mike Williams (Mebane, N.C./Orange) rushed for 181 yards and two scores in the Quakers’ 48-6 football win over Southern Virginia University Friday night.

The Quakers (1-4) forced six turnovers in the game, the most since a 32-23 road win over Catholic University Nov. 3, 2001. Nelson, a junior cornerback, recorded three second-half interceptions to tie the school record set by O.J. Batts ’04 versus Randolph-Macon College Oct. 7, 2000.

Two of Nelson’s interceptions led to Quakers’ touchdowns. Williams, a freshman making his second college start, carried 21 times for 181 yards. He had 107 yards on 11 first-half carries, thanks largely to a 77-yard touchdown run that opened the game’s scoring at 10:07 of the first quarter. He also scored on a one-yard run early in the third quarter, which boosted the Quakers’ lead to 12:46. Guilford junior quarterback Billy Watkins (Mebane, N.C./EasternAlamance) completed 15-of-24 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored on a one-yard keeper in the first quarter that made ita 14-0 game.

Both scoring passes went to junior running back Justin Parker (Greensboro, N.C./Southern Guilford), who also had a short touchdown run to finish with a career-high three touchdowns in the game. Parker led all receivers with seven grabs while teammate Tyler Hasty (Seagrove, N.C./Eastern Randolph) made four catches for a career-high 118 yards.

Senior linebacker Richie Paul (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot (Quincy) led the Quakers’ tacklers for the fifth straight game with a game-high 13 stops. Trey Billian (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot) added 10 tackles and forced a fumble.

Quinton Garrus (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) ran 17 times for a team-high 117 yards for the Knights (0-6). Sam Trulock (Lehi, Utah/Lehi)completed nine-of-17 passes for 81 yards, including a four-yard touchdown toss to Daniel Bokinsky (Dagsboro, Del./Indian River) on a fourth-down and goal play in the second quarter that made the halftime score 21-6. Bokinsky finished with a team-best six catches for 55 yards.

Following a bye week, Guilford returns to action at Bridgewater College October 17 at 1:00 p.m. in an Old Dominion Athletic Conferencegame.
