No goals for Gomez, Guilford falls to Eastern Mennonite

Greensboro, N.C. — The Royal’s Mitchell Leap scored his second goal of the match with 6:02 left in regulation to lift Eastern Mennonite past Guilford College, 4-3, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) soccer match Saturday night.

The Royals (3-3-4, 1-1-2 ODAC) scored three consecutive goals after the Quakers took an early 1-0 lead in the 16th minute of the first half. Leap gave the Royals a 2-1 halftime advantage with an unassisted tally in the 26th minute.

After a Eastern Mennonite’s Tyler Gilchrist extended the lead to 3-1 midway through the second half, Guilford (7-5-1, 2-2 ODAC) rebounded after a slow first half pulling within 3-2 on Jordan Alexander shot ‘s less than a minute later. The two teams would trade goals in the final six minutes of the match with Ronnie Castellanos scoring the final goal of the game in the 86th minute.

The Royals outshot the Quakers, 15-12, and Guilford’s Jonathan Shine recorded five of his six saves in the second half.

Guilford hosts Randolph College Tuesday (10/6) at 7:00 p.m. in an ODAC match.
