GUILFORD’S JORDAN NELSON WINS WEEKLY AWARDS

Greensboro, N.C. –Guilford College’s Jordan Nelson (Hudson, N.C./West Caldwell) won the weekly Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Defensive Football Player of the Week Award late Sunday. He is Guilford’s first recipient of the weekly defensive prize this season. Nelson, a junior, also picked up Guilford’s Student-Athlete of the Week prize, presented by Guilford’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Nelson tied the school record with three interceptions in Guilford’s 48-6 victory over Southern Virginia University Oct. 2, which helped the Quakers snap a seven-game losing streak. Two of Nelson’s three interceptions led to Quakers’ touchdowns. He also recorded two solo tackles and a pass breakup in the game.

Nelson has appeared in five games with two starts at cornerback for the Quakers this season after an injury to starter Quan Parker. Through five games, he has ranks second in the league with four interceptions and has six passes defended, which stands sixth in the league. Nelson has 15 tackles this season, 11 solo. He is also Guilford’s top kick returner, averaging 18.3 yards per kickoff, which ranks fourth in the ODAC.

Coach Kevin Kiesel’s Quakers (1-4, 0-1 ODAC) continue their season Oct. 17th against conference-rival Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Va., at 1:00 p.m.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among the school’s student-athletes and non-student-athletes.

Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive, and the start of a new program, Champs Life Skills, maintains intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the campus educational program and the student-athlete as an integral part of the student body. Its aim is to increase student-athletes community involvement, as well as engage the Guilford community with the athletic department.
