High School football Saturday morning rewind

Just received E-mail delivery on last night WG-Smith courtesy of Bill A.:
It was the Joe Turkson Show Friday night! Joe had 2 interceptions, 1 in the endzone securing a shutout for Western. He also threw a pass for a 1st down on a fake punt to keep a drive going. WG 19 – Smith 0.

(We could use more of these. Tnanks Bill….)

We have the rewind or the un-wind running here this morning as we look back at last night and look ahead to next Friday. Joe has the Page-Grimsley game covered and that will be a tough one to put to bed. Another year in the books and it looked to be a game early and Page ran away with it in the second half and they could have scored more.

Let’s bring a few notes into the rewind from late Friday night/early Saturday morning and before we do that, let me thank Page football Coach Kevin Gillespie and Grimsley head man Martin Samek for working with us in the week leading up to last night’s game. This is always a very busy and intense time and we again thank the coaches for their help. Also thanks go out to Page CAA Rusty Lee and Grimsley AD Lewis Newman for their assistance in covering this football game and it is a BIG one. How about the job Rick Mosley was doing along with Mr. Thomas in getting the sound around and info through the Jamieson Stadium by way of PA and the security leadership from Addison Edwards, Officer Heard, the big man at Grimsley who leads their SRO troops and many others.

A lot of people work hard to pull off a game as big as this one and in a final note, as the mind says “wait a miunte, I wonder about this”……Who had to get the field ready????? This was the Page Pirates’ home game. Did they have to mow the field, line it off and did they have to do the cleanup after all was said and done????? You never know until you ask and would Page like to host this game at their place and is that feasible or do we just need to shut up about all these details and get ready for next week?????

Physical details come into play in situations such as this, as Greensboro College hits that same Jamieson Stadium field today 1pm and the game-day staff had to go to work getting things prepared for that encounter as soon as the fans started filing out last night. Game-day operatons at the physical plant and in this case, the plant is Jamieson Stadium…..

Joe has the game for you and here are a few of my thoughts from late last night/early this morning on the overall slate from last evening….

(9-0) on our picks this week and 33-4 over the last 4 weeks….We feel like busting loose and Warren Scott of SG looked like he was busting loose for the Storm and he was already over 1,000 yards for the season going into that game, 33-0, Southern Guilford over SWR.

I did not see any Northern-EG highlights on NEWS 2 and was wondering how Keenan Allen did. From what I have been reading here, the KA-Josh Morehead matchup never really materialized.

Page, as John A. was discussing in a previous post, looked very impressive versus Grimsley. Grimsley showed some new offense with Lay Lay Brown lining up as the Wildcat back and he was doning #7 instead of his #23 last night. Justin Gorman was a standout for Page and the Sykes kid came up with some very big catches, just as Bruce McCoy did on his TD catch from fellow-QB James Summers. Page is doing one heck job of utilizing their talents. Harvey came in at FB for Gordon and the Pirates were still churning and Thuc and Drew Rogers compliment each other very well at TB.

Anybody know who got the offense going for SEG last night in that 40-39(OT) win over SA? NWG at Ragsdale next week might get interesting as Luke Sonricker, one of the Tigers’ fine receivers broke his wrist in the win over SWG. Hope he can make it back before the end of the season, including the playoffs.

Will Western Guilford present a challenge for Dudley in two weeks????? The Hornets have some offense and enough defense to keep Smith off of the board.

In our poll, High Point Central, Page and Northern are all (6-1) and tied for the 3rd spot. That’s a tight spot in our poll……..It will be fun to see how they seperate from each other…..Northern at McMichael next week, Page at Smith and High Point Central home to WS Parkland.

Northeast Guilford-Southern is starting to look like a conference championship-type game…….Who’s the better team, NEG or SG????? The Rams have a bunch of runners and SG has Warren Scott….This game is comng up this Friday night at NEG. This could well again, be for the Conference title!(Mid-Piedmont 3-A)

Northwest Guilford at Ragsdale is looking and looming large for next week in Jamestown. Can anyone trip up the Tigers????? Word is that NWG can run the ball down your throat and that the Tigers will be tested in this one and in weeks to come with Glenn and HP Central to follow in successive weeks after a BYE on October 23…..

The Page-Smith, NWG-Ragsdale and SG-NEG games are looking like hots ones for this coming Friday……

If you have more on the games and the teams from last night, please let us know and please continue to let us know how we can improve our coverage.

  1. Northern beat NW by a big victory i dont remember the score? and HPC beat them by 1 so i would think NG would have to be over HPC and NG and Page both beat NE by close margins so i would agree they should be tied, but not HPC and Northern

  2. The Page Navel Junior ROTC cleans up Jamieson stadium every year, whether its a home or away game.

  3. How many playoff spots will the Metro receive this year… Im thinking 3
    Dudley
    Page
    Western
    if four then maybe Grimsley
I just cant jump on the Smith Bandwagon because they havent beat anybody worth anything so far…. But it seems that they are playing harder than last year..

  4. Grimsley is 1-7, with Dudley left of the schedule.. which means they will atleast have 8 losses on the year, I think.. 3-8 at best won’t get you into the playoffs..
