Guilford over Averett in women’s soccer

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Ashley Anderson and Bri Eilman scored to lead Guilford College past visiting Averett University, 2-0, Wednesday night in a nonconference soccer match.

Sophomore Kat Adams made four saves for her second shutout in as many nights, which helped the Quakers (7-8) to their fifth win in six matches.

Guilford took the lead in the 41st minute when Anderson beat an Averett defender to a long through ball from Danielle Fiori and slotted it past oncoming goalie Samantha Lupo from 14 yards out. The goal gave the Quakers a 1-0 lead.

The Quakers, which outshot the Cougars (5-8) 21-9, kept up the pressure in the second half and finally broke through in the 65th minute. Caroline Hemeter took a free kick from midfield and Eilman outran Averett’s defense to the ball around the 18 and put it past Lupo for a 2-0 Quakers’ advantage.

Guilford returns to action Saturday (10/17) at nationally ranked Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Virginia Wesleyan College at 2:00 pm
