Jonathan Frye to Appalachian from the WS Journal

Extensive article from Tommy Bowman at the Winston-Salem Journal on Jonathan Frye’s upcoming college journey as he will head to Appalachian State to play for coach Buzz Peterson:

Jonathan Frye, a 6-4, 190-pound senior guard at Northern Guilford, has committed to play basketball at Appalachian State.

Frye averaged 16 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals last season as a junior. The Nighthawks won the Class 3-A state tournament but had their title stripped after it was determined that two players were ineligible because of school-district residency issues. Frye was not one of the players.

“It was definitely tough to go through, reaching a goal but having it taken away over some things you personally have no control over,” Frye said. “But it’s in the past and all our guys are looking forward and ready for this season.”

Frye, who has scored more than 1,000 points in his high-school career, said that he wanted to get his decision on where to attend college out of the way before his senior season. He said that he narrowed his potential choices to Appalachian, Elon and Holy Cross.

  1. Way to go Jonathan!! I believe he is the first Nighthawk to commit. Look for many more to come for the boys and the girls!!

  2. Once again.. another city/county newspaper reports on our guys better then our own newspaper does..

Charlotte Observer and now the Winston-Salem Journal..

  3. Congratulations to Jonathan!

Once again the News and Record can’t seem to report Greensboro area news…..

  4. Jonathan is a great kid on and off the court. He will play for Northern this year but is attending Early College! We are very, very proud of him and he will do well at App State!

  5. Jonathan congratulations! You are going to love ASU! The best school in the world. I am a little biased it is my alma mater. I know your mom and dad are very proud of you. Do you remember playing rec league football as a 10 year in Jamestown? You were the best 10 year old QB I ever coached.

  6. Great ball player who will succeed at App. More importantly, he is a great student and a great kid. You will never see a more level headed kid on the court and this will help him immensely on the next level. Great news for the Nighthawk program!

  7. Congratulations to Frye. He’s a fun player to watch – one of those players that can do everything well, shows a lot of court savvy. Saw him at the the Ragsdale homecoming game the other night. Still would have loved to see him and Canty and Jarus Simms and Wally Jones and Duece Bello on the same team. That group of players would have been unbeatable.

  8. To Once Again and Emily:

The N&R had the Frye commitment the day before the Journal, but why let the facts get in the way of a good rant, right?

  9. The WS Journal came with more details and they had a writer(Tommy Bowman) on it. That’s why we went with them……

Good job Jonathan and again congratulations.

  10. The best young man I have seen play basketball in many years. He is totally unselfish on the court, considers his moves and can take control of the court in tough situations. App and Coach Peterson are fortunate to have this young man join their Althletic department. App is fortunate to have this well rounded young man as a student. You will never find him to be braggadocio in any of his accomplishments.
Proud to know you Jonathan. Congratulations.
