Greensboro College moves the ball, but can’t move past CNU

They(Greensboro College Pride football team) were moving the ball up and down the field during Saturday evening’s Homecoming game at Grimsley’s Jamieson Stadium, but the Captains of Christopher Newport rode home the winner…..

The Pride had a Seth Adams pass picked off in the end zone in the second half that would have tied the score at 14-14 with the assumed PAT and Greensboro even had the early lead in the game at 7-0 on a pass from Adams to Brandon Richardson.(It was actually 7-0 GC at the half.)

Mr. Everything,(he has to be a lock for All-Conference and top Freshman player in the USA South) Antwan Thorpe, was all over the field again on offense and he makes plays and he can take hits and still keep right on getting it up the field.

Thorpe always impresses me and Richardson was doing the same thing on Saturday night as the Pride could not get the win, but they did win the battle of the numbers. We will include those later.

The Pride fell, but they did compete and boy did they compete, with a chance to tie the game coming up just short in the last minute of the contest, as the Pride had driven down to the CNU Captains 11-yard line where a field goal would have done them no good…..

Exciting and busy night with the Homecoming crowd and the Homecoming court and the Chick-Fila halftime Kickin’ Chicken Contest.

Greensboro, NC — The Greensboro College football team out-gained and perhaps outplayed Christopher Newport, but The Pride still came up short, 14-7, in its homecoming game at Jamieson Stadium on Saturday night.

CNU improved to 4-3, 3-1 and GC fell to 3-4, 1-3.

Freshmen Seth Adams (Burlington, NC/Willliams) and Antwan Throrpe excelled again on offense for The Pride. Thorpe had 115 yards on six catches. Adams was 15-33 for 231 yards an one touchdown. He threw, however, a late and costly interception in the Captain end zone.

GC’s long dormant running game woke up. Matt Martin (Morehead City, NC/West Carteret) had 110 yards on 21 carries for GC. Yet despite out-gaining CNU 381-292 and producing 21 first downs to 15 for the Captains, Greensboro recorded just one touchdown in the game.

“Sure, we fought hard and played them better than every, but we left too many points on the board,” said Pride Head Coach Dr. Randy Hunt. “We had three chances inside the 10-yard line and came away with no points.”

Despite any moral victories, GC is now 0-10 vs. Christopher Newport on the gridiron.

Adams connected with Brandon Richardson (Charlotte, NC/West Charlotte) on a 12-yard scoring pass with 3:32 left in the opening quarter. A Beau Walker (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) PAT made the score 7-0.

GC, however, squandered other chances in the second quarter. GC turned the ball over on downs after Thorpe’s toe-tap in the end zone was ruled out of bounds. On its next series, The Pride’s Georg Wolff (Berlin, Germany/Westchester Country Day (NC)) missed a 30-yard field goal attempt.

The Pride held a 7-0 lead at halftime.

CNU scored with 11:24 remaining in the third quarter. Tunde Ogun’s 25 yards scamper and an extra point tied the contest. Ogun recorded 128 rushing yards on 27 carries.

Later in the third quarter, Randell Bronte-Tinkiew intercepted Adams in the Captain end zone. The Pride had a first and goal from the five-yard-line on the play.

CNU then marched 80 yards on 16 plays for the winning score. Quarterback Antonio Epps ran four yards on a broken play for the touchdown. Matthew Bourne’s PAT made the score 14-7.

Looking to tie the game on its last possession, The Pride’s drive stalled at the nine yard line. Adams tried to get the ball to Thorpe on a fourth and goal but the pass and Thorpe were out of bounds.

With 51 seconds remaining in the game, CNU ran two plays and sealed the win.

Brian Green (Stuart, VA/Martin County) had eight tackles to the GC defense.

The Pride returns to action next Saturday at Maryville College.
