Greensboro College’s Antwan Thorpe named Top Rookie for third time this season

Greensboro College earned four honors from the USA South Conference for recent exceptional play. The Pride winners were: Jerry Bates (Richlands, NC/Richlands), Antwan Thorpe (Oxford, NC/Webb), Katie Allegro (Statesville, NC/West Iredell ) and Cara Wilcox (Charlotte, NC/Mallard Creek).

Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Katie Allegro (Statesville, NC/West Iredell ), Greensboro – The Statesville, North Carolina junior goalkeeper helped The Pride defeat USA South rival Methodist, 2-1, in double-overtime, in the team’s only action last week. Allegro played all 104 minutes, allowed just one goal and made seven saves.

Football Defensive Player of the Week
Jerry Bates (Richlands, NC/Richlands), Greensboro – The Richlands, North Carolina sophomore defensive back had four total tackles and one interception in a 26-12 win over USA South foe Maryville. Bates totaled two solo tackles and two assisted take downs in the win. He returned his second quarter interception 55 yards for what would eventually become the game-winning touchdown.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Antwan Thorpe (Oxford, NC/Webb), Greensboro – The freshman wide receiver from Oxford, North Carolina accumulated receiving, rushing and passing yards in a 26-12 win over USA South foe Maryville. Thorpe caught ten passes for 117 yards with one touchdown, ran the ball five times for eight yards with one touchdown and completed one pass for nine yards. The win was The Pride’s first ever at Maryville. Thorpe has won this honor three times this year.

Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week
Cara Wilcox (Charlotte, NC/Mallard Creek), Greensboro – The Charlotte, North Carolina freshman forward scored the game-winning goal in double-overtime to defeat USA South rival Methodist, 2-1, in the team’s only action last week. Wilcox tapped in the winning tally in the 105th minute.
