Football Drops Methodist, 42-20; Matches Program Record for Wins

Greensboro, NC – Freshman quarterback Seth Adams (Burlington, NC/Willliams) ran for three touchdowns and passed for another as Greensboro College defeated Methodist, 42-20, at Jamieson Stadium on Saturday. Adams was 17-22 for 235 yards.

Greensboro improved to 5-4, and 3-3 in the USA South. Methodist is now 2-7, 1-5. GC matched a program record for wins (2000, ’01 teams) and can set a new benchmark with a win at Shenandoah next Saturday. Additionally, the win was the largest margin of victory in a conference game since a 49-20 win over Averett in October, 2001.

“It was a physical battle, but we had control of the game most of the time,” said GC Head Coach Dr. Randy Hunt. “After halftime, we really executed and played good fundamental football.”

The Pride had 423 yards of total offense to 326 for MU. GC freshman Antwan Thorpe (Oxford, NC/Webb) had a fine all-around game. He had 65 yards rushing on six carries, caught nine balls for 94 yards and completed one pass for 48 yard gain.

Adams scored on a three yard run with 3:06 left in the first quarter. Beau Walker (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) connected on his first of six PATs for The Pride.

Methodist recorded the second quarter’s only TD. John Flannagan (10 carries, 76 yards) finished a drive with a five-yard run. The score was 7-7 at the half.

The Pride exploded for 21 points in the third quarter. Adams ran in his second TD, then Matt Martin (Morehead City, NC/West Carteret) ran one in. The final tally of the period was a nine yard pass from Adams to Scott.

Adams ran in another one to begin the fourth period scoring. Trailing 35-7, MU then ended a 28 straight Pride points with a Jason Latyon TD run. Monarch QB Erik Teauge (17-30, 196 yards) made the score 35-20 with a five-yard run.

Methodist then attempted on onside kick. They recovered but were penalized for illegal touching.

Michael Caparaso (Morganton, NC /Freedom) replaced Adams who left due to injury. He connected with fellow senior Brandon Richardson (5 catches, 125 yards) on a 33-yard strike for the game’s final touchdown. GC honored 12 seniors on Senior Night prior to the game.

On defense for The Pride, senior Devon Morrison (Denver, NC/East Lincoln) had a game-high eight tackles. Jerry Bates (Richlands, NC/Richlands) forced a fumble had an interception for the second straight week. Brian Green (Stuart, VA/Martin County) recorded two tackles for losses.

  1. Randy Hunt needs to be Coach of the Year in the USA South, especially if they win at Shenandoah (which they should). The fact he could have their best year given the financial climate at Greensboro I would imagine is going to feel like at National title to those guys. This is an amazing story.
