Sanborn and Henson, preseason All-American

Greensboro, N.C. –Guilford College seniors Tyler Sanborn (Mount Airy, N.C./Elkin) and Clay Henson (Glen Alpine, N.C./Freedom) were among 25 students named to the D3hoops.com 2009-10 Preseason Men’s Basketball All-America Team Friday.

Sanborn earned first-team honors and Henson was a fourth-team selection. The announcement marks Sanborn’s second preseason honor as the 6-11 center was also named a First Team Preseason Division III All-American by The Sporting News.

A Fourth Team D3hoops.com All-American in 2008-09, Sanborn is coming off a career year in which he totalled 20 double-doubles and averaged 15.4 points, 12.9 rebounds and 2.5 blocks over 32 games. He was Guilford’s third straight D3hoops.com’s South Region Player of the Year and earned First Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) honors.

Sanborn garnered Second Team All-South District honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Division III Basketball Sectional at John Carroll University. Sanborn starts his senior season ranked third among Guilford’s career blocks leaders (76) and 14th in career rebounds (668).

Henson, a 6-2, 170-pound guard, averaged 18.8 points and 2.5 assists per game as a junior. He ranked 37th in NCAA Division III with 3.0 three-pointers per game and scored at least 15 points in 23 contests. Henson landed first-team all-region honors from both D3hoops.com and the NABC.

The First Team All-ODAC selection became the 28th Quaker to score over 1,000 career points and enters his senior season with 1,128 points, which stands 23rd on Guilford’s all-time scoring list. Henson set the school’s career three-pointers standard (189) in last year’s season finale versus Franklin & Marshall College.

Seventh-year head coach Tom Palombo’s club is ranked third in the D3hoops.com Preseason Top-25 Poll and was tabbed second in The Sporting News’ preseason national rankings. Sanborn and Henson are two of three starters returning from last year’s club that finished third in the nation with a 26-6 overall mark. Guilford opens the 2009-10 season Nov. 17 versus visiting Methodist University at 7:00 p.m. in the Ragan-Brown Field House.
