Guilford College Quakers start strong with win over Monarchs: fomer Eastern Guilford star Mark Jernigan leads Methodist with 16

Quakers’ Sanborn and Henson come out like a house-on-fire……..

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Clay Henson scored a game-high 22 points and Tyler Sanborn added 20 points and 16 rebounds in Guilford College’s 91-72 men’s basketball win over Methodist University Tuesday night in the Quakers’ season opener.

Guilford (1-0) is ranked third in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.

Sanborn had 13 points and 10 rebounds by halftime as the Quakers built a 45-32 lead. Guilford’s Tobi Akinsola scored seven of his 12 points during an 11-0 burst late in the first half, which turned a 28-24 game into a 15-point Quakers’ edge. Guilford forced 11 first-half turnovers, which resulted in 18 points.

Henson got rolling in the second half with 14 of his 22 points. He made five-of-nine three-pointers, including three-of-four in the second half.

Mark Jernigan(Eastern Guilford) paced Methodist (0-2) with 16 points.

The Quakers return to action Wednesday (11/18) against cross-town rival Greensboro College at 8:00 p.m. in the Greensboro Coliseum.
