LaGrange, PA. — Freshman Chakiris Moss (Richmond Hill, GA/Richmond Hill High School) had a game high 21 points as Greensboro College won at LaGrange, 85-69, on Saturday. The win was the fifth straight for The Pride (5-3). Moss was 6-11 from the field, 6-6 from the foul line and made 3 three-point baskets.
The recipe was the same for The Pride. GC shot well (28-54 for 52-percent), out-rebounded the Panthers (41-30) and committed fewer turnovers (7-13).
The Pride had four others in double-figures: Lewis Owenby (Black Mountain, NC/Owen) (16 points); Adam Powell (Stuart, FL/Jensen Beach High) (15); Jason Baker (Detroit, MI/Anchor Bay Prep) (13) and Walter Brady (St. Petersburg, Fla./Gibbs) (11). Owenby was 7-9 shooting and tied Baker for team-high rebounds with 7 boards.
GC led 39-26 at the break. The Pride led by its biggest margin after a Luqman Tijani (Greensboro, NC/Page High School) dunk made it 66-45 with 9:06 remaining. LC cut the lead to 10 points twice in the final 1:07.
Nic Whitfiled led LaGrange (2-6) with 19 points.
The Pride is off for final exams next week. GC next hosts Mary Washington on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. The contest is Greensboro’s final home game of 2009.
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Quantrell Simmons scored a game-high 20 points and Stephen Fields added 19 points in Virginia Wesleyan College’s 71-68 upset of fourth-ranked Guilford College Saturday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest.
The Quakers are ranked fourth in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll and had won 12 straight regular-season games dating back to last season.
Simmons and Fields combined to score the Marlins’ (6-1, 1-1 ODAC) final eight points and thrwarted the Quakers’ (4-1, 0-1 ODAC) comeback. Guilford’s Clay Henson drilled a three-pointer after a Virginia Wesleyan turnover with 15 seconds left to pull the Quakers to within 69-68.
Following a Guilford time out, Simmons iced the win with a layup with six seconds left. Henson’s three-pointer with one second remaining was off the mark.
The Marlins shot 50 percent (28-56) from the floor and made 10-of-24 three-pointers. Travis Washington and Simmons made consecutive trifectas midway through the second to open a six-point spread and break the game’s seventh and final tie. Virginia Wesleyan never relinquished the lead.
Rhett Bonner paced the Quakers with 20 points, including 14 in the second half. He made all 10 free-throw attempts in the game. Henson and Tyler Sanborn both finished with 14 points.
The Quakers are back in action Wednesday (12/9) at league-rival Hampden-Sydney College at 7:00 p.m.
