HS Hoops Tonight with the cold air outside, things will be heating up on the inside with Conference action jumping

The high school hoops really get jumping tonight with some real important early-season conference games on the slate and we will be at Dudley for the Grimsley Whirlies and the Dudley Panthers and their Metro 4-A contest…..

The boy’s game will get under way some time around 8:30 and we will be on the radio and on the internet at around 8pm with the pre-game show and we hope to have updates coming in during the game on other area games including Page at Western Guilford, Northern at Eastern Guilford, Ragsdale at High Point Andrews and hopefully Ravenscroft at the Greensboro Day School….

We will be on the air on AM950 radio and tonight on wpetam950.com…….

The schedule reads:
Grimsley at Dudley….Panthers coming off of that loss up in Danville, Virginia and the Whirlies fresh off that win over High Point Andrews where Krechaun Williams had 28 points and the Sweeney brothers had 16 each…PJ Hairston was averaging 38 points a game for Dudley going into the GW Danville game and was held to 17 in Virginia……Can Grimsley come in and upset the Panthers in the Panthers’ house?????

Page at Western Guilford….Hornets are coming off of a loss to SWG and Page fell by 10, 71-61, at NWG on Tuesday….WG led by Reggie Perkins, Antwan Wilkerson, Neal Spinks, Tyler Stutts and DeEric Baldwin; while Page is paced by their leading scorer Demone Harrison, along with Stacey Greene, Frankie Eaves, Jackson Kent and James Summers….WG would have the edge on the inside, but will they be able to pound the ball in there?

Northern at Eastern Guilford…..This might be your #2 game of the night or even the #1 game with the unbeaten Nighthawks facing the unbeaten Wildcats….EG is led by Brandon Hairston, who might be the most surprising player in the area this season and the Cat’s have Darius Dawkins along with Adam Gann and Butch Huffman in the backcourt(Real quick ‘Cats in the backcourt…..Northern has Jon Frye, Dylan Berry and their new big man in Barry Scoggins, who was at Dudley last year and NG also has Jon McBeth back now that football is finished and McBeth saw considerable playing time for NG last year as a freshman….This has not been confirmed, but someone told me they saw Maurice Harris’ name in the Northern box score from a game the other night….This is what basketball before Christmas is all about and the house should be rockin’ for this conference game in Gibsonville tonight and the girl’s game should be scoreboard lighter as well with Coffer, Tessitore and Tahmasab facing Small, Crosby and Jenkins…..Hayes and Jamison could be the X-Factors…..

Smith at Southeast Guilford….Smith is playing beyond expectations with Darius Bartell and now with Eric Ebron back they should be able to take SEG. I was at this game back in 1999 when Kevin Swinton was a freshman for Southeast and now he has gone from Wake Forest to UNC-Wilmington and now the Swinton-Bomb is out at Oklahoma Baptist gettting warmed up and he’s set to suit up for OBU….The Swinton-Bomb is Kevin’s dunk which he started doing back when he was 10 years old…

Ragsdale at HP Andrews….The Ragsdale Tigers have started out at (0-4) and they have been without Tyquan Roberts since he injured his knee in the 4th quarter last Friday night at Page and at that time Ragsdale was ahead of the Pirates, but they have been behind ever since, according to Mike Ellis of the Jamestown News….Andrews just got tripped up by Grimsley and they will be without guard Corban Collins and inside man Terry Biles for the rest of the season; so Alex Smith, Quan Stevenson and Darius Rogers will really have to step it up for HPA and for Ragsdale it will be up to Brandon Pressley and Benija Wise to rally the troops….

Those games above are the main events for this evening, but there are many other games in the area as well with:
Raleigh Ravenscroft at the Unbeaten Greensboro Day School Bengals(12-0) Robert Kleinnman had a big night back on Tuesday for the Bengals….

Southwest at Northeast Guilford……Non-conference, but a good match-up none the less with Greg Bridges coming off of a big at WG on Wednesday for SWG and Bryce Benjamin and Darius White carrying the load for NEG….

High Point Central at West Forsyth…..Must be a favor game between coaches, because I don’t know much about the roots behind this one, but I do know that Derek Grant and Shaq Bethea have been playing well for HPC….

O’Neal at Caldwell Academy….I have been hearing a lot about the Saunders kid for Caldwell and I know they still have the Ewing Carter kid and is that #2 guard(Michael Page) they had last year back again, if so they win tonight by 15…….

Cary Academy at HP Wesleyan….The Trojans are (7-4) and led by Deng Leek and Leak Leek and also Will Coble, the son of former High Point University star Ray Coble…..

Metrolina at Westchester Country Day…Deuce Bello had 28 in the win last night for WCD and look for him to pump in about 30 more tonight….

  1. The Saunders kid from Caldwell is a very good player. 6-7 wing that can shoot the 3 ball well and is scoring around 20+ per game. Ewing Carter is back as you mentioned and Michael Page is back at the shooting gaurd spot (had 23 points on Tuesday, 7 – 3’s).

  2. I think great girls games tonight would be NG/EG and Smith/SEG. Both are key conference games that could go either way. I think Dudley girls have an easy win tonight and Page/WG girls will be a fight. WG hasnt been consistent but should give Page a challenge. Page hasnt won since their opening game against NEG. Maybe its time to turn it up. NEG girls hasnt been consistent either but has won games no one thought they could. It would be interesting if they beat SWG. Maybe they will be a conference contender

  3. On Caldwell Academy…

I don’t know the Saunders kid, but I sure respect what he has been doing and I have met Ewing Carter and Michael Page and they are two excellent young men….

Best of luck to Caldwell Academy and I hope they still have the same coach as last year, he has his junk(priorities) together……Solid leader…..

  4. GDS-Ravenscroft should be a really good game. I have a friend in Raleigh who saw Ravenscroft play and he said their guards are the real deal. Especially the PG. I think he has already signed a D1 scholarship. Should be fun to see how the Bengals guard them. And how the guards at the Day School match up.

  5. Good game with NG/EG both girls and boys. Ng girls was up 20pts and EG fought back. Sam Coffer got into foul trouble and never gained their momentum back. Hard loss for the girls but I think they will show up and show out on their next oppendnts. Good game EG girls
