ASHEBORO — This time there was no miraculous comeback. This time there was no long-distance shot that broke the hearts of the Asheboro High School varsity basketball team. This time, Trinity High School didn’t have a late answer for the Blue Comets.

After numerous opportunities over the past years in which the Bulldogs would post some type of rally or withstand valiant AHS efforts, the Blue Comets tasted victory in this rivalry as Asheboro maintained a slight lead for most of the second half in earning a 56-50 nonleague win over the Bulldogs Tuesday night at AHS.

The victory by the AHS boys gave the Blue Comets a sweep as the girls used a 16-point run in the first half for a 59-40 victory.

Less than two weeks ago, AHS owned a five-point lead over the Bulldogs(7-1) with just 24 seconds left and lost, thanks to a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Ethan Cox. The Blue Comets found themselves in a similar situation Tuesday, leading 52-46 with under a minute left, but this time they made it stand up.

“It’s a relief,” said AHS coach Brian Nance after the Blue Comets improved to 6-2. “I think at times in the past we have looked at the front of their jerseys and played a little scared. I think in the fourth quarter tonight we showed some maturity and our offensive patience was better. We’ve had chances in the past to beat them. It feels good.”

Saegan Hilliard had 18 points, 7 assists and 6 steals in leading Asheboro over Trinity last night…..
