Guilford men roll 83-52, in win over Maryville

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Clay Henson (Glen Alpine, N.C./Freedom) scored a game-high 22 points and teammate Tyler Sanborn (Mount Airy, N.C./Elkin) added 20 points and 17 rebounds in Guilford College’s 83-52 victory over visiting Maryville (Tenn.) College Wednesday night in the Ragan-Brown Field House.

Guilford, ranked sixth in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, improved to 6-1 with the win.

The pair got the Quakers’ off to a great start, combining for 30 of Guilford’s 36 first-half points as Guilford led by nine at the break. Sanborn made his first six shots, all in the paint, and Henson was seven-for-11 from the floor in the first half with two three-pointers. Henson had seven points during an 11-2 Guilford run that opened a 25-14 edge midway through the first half.

The Fighting Scots (8-2) came out strong in the second half and pulled to within 42-37 with 15:15 remaining on a Greg Hernandez (Miami, Fla./LaSalle) layup. Guilford put out the rally by reeling off 18 of the game’s next 19 points and opened a 60-38 edge on a Sanborn dunk with 8:12 left in the game.

Guilford shot over 50 percent from the floor in both halves, shot 53.3 percent for the game and outscored Maryville in the paint, 46-20. The Quakers’ aggressive defense limited Maryville to 30.2 percent shooting from the floor, well off it 47% season average. Behind Sanborn’s season-high 17 boards, the Quakers enjoyed a 49-28 edge on the glass

Hernandez paced the Fighting Scots with 16 points and six rebounds. Eryk Watson (Powder Springs, Ga./Kennesaw Mountain) added 13 points, four boards and three steals.

Guilford heads to Tennessee Saturday for the Lon Varnell Classic in Sewanee, Tenn. The Quakers play Huntingdon College Saturday and Rust College Sunday.
