ASHEBORO — Apparently the week off had little effect on the Asheboro varsity boys basketball team.
The Blue Comets opened the 19th The Courier-Tribune Christmas Invitational with a 77-57 win over Randolph County rival Southwestern Randolph on Monday at AHS. Asheboro moves on to play Jordan-Matthews today at 6:30 p.m. in a championship semifinal, while the Cougars face Randleman at 2 p.m. in the consolation bracket.
“It’s going to be a whole different game,†Blue Comets coach Brian Nance said of today’s game against the Jets. “They’re a quick team. They don’t have a lot of size. We got to play a lot of kids today — we like to go 8 or 9 deep; that way, we can play two or three games in a row.â€
Asheboro started Monday’s game with a 12-0 run and ended the first quarter having outscored the Cougars 19-4. After that, it was a 58-53 game.
Saegan Hilliard paced the Blue Comets (8-2) with 23 points and 10 assists , while Dayshun Jones added 19 and Antonio Thomas chipped in 18.
*****Asheboro will be playing our Northeast Guilford Rams and Southern Guilford Storm in conference games this season, so this could get interesting……*****
