GREENSBORO SPORTS COUNCIL AWARDS ANNUAL BILL LEE SCHOLARSHIPS DURING PIZZA HUT INVITATIONAL

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Four Greensboro high school students were awarded the Bill Lee Scholarship during the 34th annual Pizza Hut Invitational presented by NewBridge Bank, it was announced today. The Greensboro Sports Council awards the $1,000 scholarships during this annual high school basketball tournament.

The Bill Lee Memorial Scholarship was established by the Greensboro Sports Council following Lee’s death in 2001. Recipients are nominated by the schools participating in the Pizza Hut Invitational presented by NewBridge Bank each year, and the Greensboro Sports Council awards the scholarships. Each nomination is considered with the following criteria: 40% academic, 40% athletic and 20% civic. Four student-athletes receive a scholarship each year; the following winners bring the total number of scholarships awarded to 32.

“We are very proud of these four impressive student athletes,” Greensboro Sports Council president Dwight Stone said. “We chose from some outstanding nominees this year; these are great kids who clearly have bright futures ahead of them. We are very happy to be able to help with some of their college expenses.”

Bill Lee was a major advocate of Greensboro’s downtown revitalization and development and a major part of Greensboro’s professional baseball efforts. In 2000, as a general partner of Greensboro’s Minor League team, he was instrumental in negotiating a contract extension with the New York Yankees through the 2002 season. A new baseball stadium in downtown Greensboro was dream and vision that Lee championed as an owner of the local team. A plaque honoring Lee’s many contributions to professional baseball in Greensboro adorns the outside of the Edgeworth Street wall of NewBridge Bank Park downtown.

The Pizza Hut Invitational presented by NewBridge Bank is an annual high school basketball tournament in Greensboro, N.C. Founded in 1976 as the Little 4, the tournament features men’s and women’s teams representing eight Guilford County high schools playing at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex Special Events Center. Because it is an invitational tournament, teams can change each year, but teams can also remain the same from year-to-year. One hundred percent of tournament proceeds are donated to local charities and the participating schools; the Pizza Hut Invitational is planned and implemented by the Greensboro Sports Council.
