Guilford’s Tyler Sanborn named ODAC Basketball Player of the Week

Greensboro, N.C. — Guilford College’s Tyler Sanborn won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s (ODAC) Men’s Basketball Player Week Award Monday. The senior center also collected his second straight Guilford Student-Athlete of the Week honor, presented by Guilford’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The ODAC award covers contests from Dec. 14-Jan. 3.

A 6-9, 260-pound center, Sanborn averaged 23.4 points, 13.4 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game in Guilford’s 5-0 stretch since Dec. 14. He shot just under 70 percent from the floor and scored no fewer than 21 points in all five games. Sanborn extended his double-double streak to six and captured Most Valuable Player honors at the 39th annual Marietta Shrine Tournament after averaging 21.5 points, 13.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks in Guilford’s two wins. A member of the D3hoops.com Team of the Week for games of Dec. 14-20, Sanborn collected Lon Varnell Classic all-tournament honors after averaging 27 points and 12 boards in wins over Huntingdon College and Rust College. He hit for a season-high 27 points and grabbed 14 caroms in Guilford’s 71-58 win over Huntingdon and had 27 points the following day in the Quakers’ win over Rust. Sanborn scored 20 points and grabbed 17 boards to help Guilford hand Maryville (Tenn.) College its second loss of the season, 82-53, Dec. 16.

Sanborn has climbed into sixth place among the ODAC scoring leaders with a team-high 18.7 points per game. He leads the league in rebounds per game (12.9) and field-goal percentage (.656) and stands second in blocks per game (2.36). Sanborn, a 2009 D3hoops.com Fourth Team All-American, has moved into 10th place among Guilford’s career leaders with 810 rebounds and needs 51 points to become the school’s 29th 1,000-point scorer.
