Quaker men do it again, Guilford now (11-1) on the season

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Tyler Sanborn tallied 27 points and 19 rebounds, both game and season highs, in Guilford College’s 89-82 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win at Lynchburg College Wednesday night.

Sanborn’s seventh straight double-double helped Guilford (11-1, 2-1 ODAC) to its seventh straight win. The Quakers are ranked sixth in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.

The Quakers’ Rhett Bonner scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half, including all eight free-throw attempts, which proved critical. Bonner’s three-pointer with 10:20 left in regulation opened a 71-46 Quakers’ lead, but Lynchburg rallied to within six points with 14 seconds to play.

The Hornets’ (5-7, 1-3 ODAC) Steven Echols fueled the host’s late rally by scoring all 16 of his points in the second half, including 12 in the final 9:20. His traditional three-point play with 14 seconds remaining made it an 86-80 game. He fouled out a second later, which sent Bonner to the line for two free throws and an eight-point edge.

Lynchburg’s Danny Reed, who scored all 10 of his points in the second half, hit a layup with three seconds left to make it an 88-82 contest. Guiford’s Sanborn closed out the scoring by making one of two free throws with one second remaining.

Sanborn made 10-of-16 shots from the floor and grabbed six of his 19 boards off the offensive glass. The senior moved within 24 points of 1,000 for his career. Teammates Clay Henson and Martin Stephenson added 16 points and 10 points, respectively.

Nate Campbell paced the Hornets with 19 points and nine rebounds. Echols added five assists and five steals to his 16 points. Brandan Connor drained four-of-seven three-pointers and finished with 14 points.

Guilford returns to action Saturday (1/9) against league-rival Randolph College at 3:00 p.m. It will be Youth Day at the Ragan-Brown Field House with special activities and giveaways for all children in attendance.
