Williams shines as she wins Guilford’s SAW award

ALEXA WILLIAMS NAMED GUILFORD COLLEGE STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

GREENSBORO, N.C. –* *Alexa Williams (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley) *of
the women’s basketball team received the Guilford College Student-Athlete of
the Week Award for the week of Jan. 4-10. *Williams *is the first women’s
basketball student-athlete to earn the weekly honor this season. The award
is presented by Guilford’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

A 5-9 senior forward, *Williams *led the Quakers to a 2-1 week with 12.0
points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.3 steals per game. She notched double-doubles in
victories over Hollins University and previously unbeaten Eastern Mennonite
University. *Williams *hit for a team- and season-high 20 points, 10
rebounds and three steals in the Quakers’ win over Hollins Jan. 5. She made
a game-high six steals in a road loss to Bridgewater College Jan. 8. Her
team-leading third double-double of the season comprised of 13 points and a
game-best 10 boards led the Quakers to victory at Eastern Mennonite Jan. 9.

*Williams *has climbed into a share of the team scoring lead with a 10.0
points per game average. She stands sixth among Old Dominion Athletic
Conference (ODAC) rebounding leaders with a team-high 8.0 caroms per
contest. Her 2.75 steals per game stand third in the league and second on
the team to teammate *Jasmine Wood (Dunwoody, Ga./Dunwoody)*.
*Williams *averages 3.17 offensive rebounds per game, the ODAC’s fifth-highest average, which has helped the Quakers to a league-best 17.0 offensive boards per game.

Coach *Stephanie Flamini’s* Quakers (7-5, 4-3 ODAC) open the week tied for
fifth in the ODAC standings. Guilford has won five of its last seven contests and opens a four-game homestand Tuesday (1/12) versus league-rival Randolph College at 7:00 p.m. The Quakers host league-leading Randolph-Macon College Friday (1/15) and Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday (1/16) at 4:00 p.m.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which
is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 20 varsity teams.
The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and builds community among the school’s student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive and the promotion of Champs Life Skills, which promotes intercollegiate athletics as a key part of the campus educational program and the student-athlete as an integral part of the student body. Its aim is
to increase student-athletes’ community involvement and to engage the greater Guilford community with the athletic department.
