Woody Durham says, “Graves plays like a demon” and it’s Heels on wheels, 78-64 over Virginia Tech

Will Graves(Dudley HS) had 13 points and 6 rebounds to help lead the North Carolina Tar Heels to a come-from-behind victory over the Virginia Tech Hokies on Sunday night. William had 13 points and 6 big rebounds and he hit three straight, three-pointers. that propelled and pushed UNC in front, after the Heels trailed the Hokies at the half.

Will Graves efforts and especially his tenacity on the boards, led Tar Heel announcer Woody Durham to say, “that Graves is playing like a demon the way he is going after those rebounds out there tonight”…..

No. 9 UNC Downs Virginia Tech, 78-64

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -Just about everybody is healthy again for No. 9 North Carolina – and that includes coach Roy Williams. And once those 3-pointers finally began to fall again, the Tar Heels started feeling even better.

North Carolina overcame a big game from Malcolm Delaney and hit five consecutive 3s to pull away from Virginia Tech 78-64 on Sunday night. Ed Davis had 20 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots, and Larry Drew II added 14 points. Deon Thompson and Will Graves added 13 apiece for the Tar Heels (12-4, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference).

They opened the second half with an efficient burst that helped them bounce back from a surprising overtime loss at the College of Charleston, improve to 11-0 at home and avoid losing their ACC opener for the second straight year.

  1. i did not see Graves play at Dudley when he was in greensboro but can anyone explain this to me. Graves scored nearly 48 pts in a game at Dudley and is one of the highest scoring individuals in state high school history if i am correct. how is he having problems scoring at UNC? he has a body that is stronger and thicker than most guys his size and he showed periods of quick play. does anyone have any insight into the answer?

  2. You have a point to a certain degree that he could be scoring more, but in college they are looking for a more balanced attack and not those huge scoring outbursts.

The Heels and most college clubs are seeking balanced scoring with hopefully five guys in double-digits and the Heels were very close to that last night.

Graves almost falls into a tweener category. He’s not like an Ed Davis who sits inside and blocks shots, grabs 10 boards a game and hits for 15 or more points every night.

William has become an outside shooter who will get the green light if his shot is falling or he may have to take a seat if that shot is not going in and he still is coached to play with what the coaches call that sense of urgency where he must rebound and bang with the big men as he goes to the boards and they are teaching Graves and everyone on that team to go after and win those loose balls, or the 50-50 balls as they are calling them….

He is getting better with his quality minutes and he is becoming more consistant….

  3. Will is coming along fine in the last few games… He need more mins to get more comfortable in the rotation…. To me he is their best shooting on the floor… Don’t leave him open he will knock them down… Yesterday he Will has 28 mins which was really good…. Keep up the good work Will.

  4. If Will keeps on playing like he has been lately he might be playing for a championship ring.

I wouldn’t put it past the Tar Heels to repeat this year as National Champs. As the young players get more minutes this team could be awesome.
