Greensboro College men defeat DII Concord University 88-79 at Hanes Gym

Greensboro, NC – Adam Powell (Stuart, FL/Jensen Beach High) had 22 points and Lewis Owenby (Black Mountain, NC/Owen) scored 18 and had 11 rebounds as Greensboro College defeated visiting Concord University (W.V.), 88-79, at Hanes Gym on Monday night. The Pride, which had five players score in double digits, improved to 7-6 on the year.

Powell was 9-14 from the field and Owenby was 6-6 from the free throw line. Freshman Luqman Tijani (Greensboro, NC/Page High School) had 13 points, R.J. Smith had 11 and Jason Baker (Detroit, MI/Anchor Bay Prep) contributed 10 for the home team.

GC closed the first half on an 11-2 run over the last 2:35 and held a 45-42 lead at the break. Concord led by as many as nine points in the first half.

The Mountain Lions were led by Cory Willard who had 24 points. He was 9-16 from the field and made 6-10 three-pointers.

CU cut the lead to 72-69 with a three-pointer by Marlin Cribbs with 7:27 remaining. The Pride, however, outscored the visitors 15-9 the rest of the way. Concord, an NCAA Division II team, dropped to 1-9.

The Pride won the battle of the boards 43-35. GC shot 50-percent (31-62) to CU’s 45-percent (31-69).

GC hosts Ferrum in a women’s/men’s doubleheader on Wednesday night.
