  1. Andy, I saw you at the game taking notes…You should of taken a nap in the 2nd qtr! I guess the plan was to shortin the game or try to bore CC to death. What’s your take on GDS not coming out the zone to play basketball? I’m sure the guys were jacked for a big game like and then not given the chance ummmmm.

  2. Was at the game as well. My understanding was the coaching staff was ecstatic that Char Christian held the ball. They felt like they were being dominated on both offense and defense and had their two best inside players with 2 fouls. I couldn’t believe CC held the ball. They could have been up 20 at half. They kicked GDS’s butt up and down the court the first half. CC can really play D. They have great length and athleticism. All that being said, and as bad and boring as the second quarter was, how about the 2nd half. That was some entertaining basketball. GDS for the first time all year played defense like they used to. If they could have just made a shot. They couldnt score inside or out it seemed like. A real problem they have. And does anyone know why Kleinman wasn’t dressed but on the bench? They sure could have used his scoring. They better figure out a way to score more with the stretch of games they have coming up.

  3. I WAS @ THE GAME GDS did’t come out of the zone b/c they knew it was getting ugly. GDS has alot of work to do i was upset the 1ST game i make it to and GDS does not come to play ball. all the hype about GDS been the best in the area please ,me my dog and cat , my dad and grandfather can beat GDS. i was very dissapointed at GDS b/c they was not ready to play. they are not the FIBER on this area Andy you should take that statment back. I know a team can have a bad day but it was clear in the 1QTR that GDS could not play with them. and please after reading this PLEASE don’t say there is not to many teams in this area that can play with charlotte christian. I CAN EXCEPT LOSING THE GAME, BUT NOT TRYING IS TOTALLY UNEXCEPTABLE……. I WISH I CAN GET MY MONEY BACK!!!!!!!!!

  4. I wasn’t there and glad of it, but that game must have set hs basketball back a few years. Unbelievable that two supposedly top teams in the state would put on a display like that. Two coaches with huge egos seem to have let those egos get the best of them. I am sure the kids didn’t want that kind of game, but the coaches weren’t willing to give in to the other one. That game did a lot to help prepare kids for the next level.

  5. i did not go to school in the triad nor do i have any kids in high school in greensboro but your comments about GDS are crazy. you want your money back – just don’t go back and watch them play anymore. maybe you would prefer seeing Northern play some weak 3A team from Rockingham or Caswell Co or some of the other power house games being played in the city on a nightly basis. Oh I am sorry – I forgot this city only has about 4 or 5 high D1 players on the floor on any given night. If you eliminated Dudley and Northern from the choices, then that D1 player # drops to zero or maybe 1.

the bottomline is that the private school b-ball schedule that GDS plays is loaded with high D1 talent. Nearly every team that GDS plays outside of this city has 2-3 players already committed to ACC schools. Other PJ at Dudley – can you name even 2 other players in the entire city playing at that level. GDS was beat last night because they were out manned, without 1 of their best shooters, and just missed too many shots last night. Charlotte Christain was ranked 2nd in the state amongst private schools. GDS plays the majority of the top 10 ranked private schools every single year and they continuously only have 2-5 loses year after year even with that schedule.

the 2nd Q was ugly last night but for my money GDS is the place to be night in and night out (with the only exception being Dudley).

  6. I think one thing we learned last night is that Charlotte Christian is a very good basketball team and it is very possible they are much better now than they were back when they had Stephon and Seth Curry and Greensboro Day beat them at GDS for the State Independent title….

Greensboro Day got stops and Charlotte Christian turned the ball over in the last 2:30 of this game and that gave GDS chances to win the game…GDS got the stops they had to have to put themselves in a position to win the contest, but they could not finish on the offensive end…..

Brandon Dorsett, Lucas Weavil and Christian Pulliam did their job, but the Greensboro Day big men are not finishing around the basket. In my opinion that is where the problem lies right now. Until the big men get stronger and they start finishing around the basket, GDS will have problems with high quality teams such as Charlotte Christian, Christ School and Ravenscroft……

When you make your mind up to slow down the game it is almost like jumping off of a cliff. If that is your game plan, there is no looking back once you decide to go with it. I know, you can say once you get in that zone, you can always come out, but it is like once you make your mind up as a coach that you are going to play that way, you intend to stay with it….

With all that happened or did not happen in the firsr half, the GDS Bengals still had themselves in position to win that game with 2 minutes remaining in the 4th and final quarter…Again, if you get stops, you have to finish on the offensive end.

The referees sure had a easy time of it in the 2nd quarter when the clock was running and that was about all that was moving.

Since we are breaking this down and that is what we are deep into now, all the blame has been placed at the feet of Greensboro Day for the stall ball….It takes two to tango my friends….

I was sitting up there thinking since Charlotte has the ball and they had the lead it was up to Greensboro Day to come out and pick them up and create play since the Bengals were down, but that was not the case…GDS was sitting back, but Charlotte Christian made no effort whatsoever to take the ball to the basket or to start their offense until there was just 10 seconds left in the half……Charlotte Christian just sat there and dribbled our the clock.

Greensboro Day had a specific defensive mind set and Charlotte Christian decided we are not going to play ball either….It sounds like all the blame is going to GDS, but like I stated earlier it takes two to tango and was CC scared they were going to fail if they craked up the offense and took it to the basket and initiated the offense while GDS sat back in the zone????? Charlotte Christian made no effort to score unitl the clock had run down and Greensboro becomes becomes a bit of winner in this stalemate, because if you ask me, they forced CC to change their game….

Bottom line is that GDS won the second half(22-18), but they did not win the game(32-26)…..

This makes for a good discussion, and I still believe that Greensboro Day is the fiber of our HS basketball community and Dudley is in that category too…Dudley and GDS have nutured our HS basketball community over the past 15 years and before that the Page Pirates were carrying the measuring stick for about 10 years….I can’t think of any other high schools that can come close to what these three have accomplished in the past 25 years……

A long posting on my part and this does make for a very strong discussion/debate….Some say you had to be there and I have been there since I put up that first shot that went over the top of the backboard back in 5th grade, but I am glad I stuck with it and stayed the course and I also have become a major part of what goes on in this local sports commuity and the people depend on me to bring it to the table each day and I hope I can continue to do so……

Let’s hear more on this subject…..

  7. The GDS big men are not polished on the offensive end. They have a tough time catching and finishing. They do, however, play extremely hard. They rebound the ball and play hard on the defensive end. There were quite a few great blocks at the rim. Back to the gym to practice those drop steps. I would love to see a big who can finish with both hands. It makes the game a lot easier.

  8. GDS remains the class of the area. This is far and away the premier program in Greensboro. They have the best coaches around and every one of their young men improve.

  9. To what – very disappointed – the fact is all these D1 players you refer too, playing on the private schools teams, most of them will be setting way down at hte end of the bench!! No conference for that matter is going to be loaded with that much talent, so all this talk about weak conferences is a bunch of BS!! I think alot of you people go to high school games and expect to see college level play – that ain’t going to happen!!

  10. I agree with Get real – we need to enjoy High School basketball for what it is. With all of the private schools that “highly talented D1 types” gravitate to these days, we can’t expect to see that many D1 prospects remaining in public school programs. Just a fact about the state of the system in place today.

  11. I KNEW THE CRYING WILL START THE DAY AFTER, IF YOU ARE WINNING A GAME AND THE OTHER TEAM GOES ZONE MOST TEAMS HOLD THE BALL TO PULL THEM OUT OF THE ZONE, BUT GDS STAYED IN THE ZONE AND LOST!!!! BAD COACHING IF YOU ASK ME. CC KNEW THAT GDS COULD NOT GUARD THEM MAN TO MAN. AND FOR D1 PROSPECT IN THE AREA FROM WHAT I HEAR ORMA HAS A ENTIRE TEAM OF THEM AND GDS HAS ONE MAYBE, SO GET THE FACTS TOGETHER THIS SITE NEVER KEEPS IT REAL WHEN IT COMES TO GDS FREEDY IS LIKE FSU COACH I THINK IT IS TIME FOR HIM TO PAST THE TEAM ON TO SOMEBODY ELSE. THE FIBER IS DUDLEY ,PAGE,SMITH,GRIMSLEY, NORTHERN AND THE OTHER PUBLIC SCHOOLS SYSTEM B/C THEY DONT RECLASS KIDS TO ME IT IS HOW YOU PLAY NOT IF YOU WIN OR LOSE……INTEGRITY…….AND I WANT GO SEE GDS PLAY AGAIN I AM SURE OTHER PEOPLE AT THE GAME FEELS THE SAME WAY. STOP MAKING EXCUSES EVERY TIME GDS LOSE A GAME BUT WHEN THEY WHEN YOU SEE IT ON THE FRONT PAGE…..BUT I DID’T SEE 20-3 THIS MORNING WHEN I CAME TO THIS SITE ………

  12. I don’t understand why all of you people are hating on GDS. especially the comment about someone freakin dog and cat. Go watch what you normally do on the computer screen when your family isn’t home and stop hating on Bengals basketball

  13. In regards to the 2nd quarter for all the basketball intellects…

1 – The team who has the ball determines if they will hold the ball or NOT. They are the ones who initiate the situation… Then the defensive team decides what’s best for them.
2 – Since Charlotte Christian has 2 D1 Bigs (South Carolina commit in Gill and University of Virginia commit in Mitchell”both are 6 foot 8″) and 3 other 6 foot 6 or bigger kids off the bench. Why would GDS come out of a zone when all 3 big guys were in foul trouble after the 1st quarter? They were only down 8-10pts and it would have been major D1 guys posting up and dunking all day on 6 foot guards. The better question is why would a team with 2 high-major players and several others getting recruited by Division I schools decide to hold the ball when they had the opposing team in early foul trouble?
3 – The game was very good (aside from the slow 2nd quarter) for any fan of high school basketball. The kids for both teams competed defensively, hustled, and played with emotion. It was a competitive battle for two of our state’s very good teams.

    “REA-Very Dissapointed”
The Fiber of High School basketball in the area is all the teams whether public or private, good or bad that compete in the region. The more better teams and coaches their are …the better it is for the local high school basketball community. The fact of the matter is Dudley and Greensboro Day are the two teams who have achieved the most success in the most recent period of time.

  14. Where in the world does this stuff come from? Poor GDS is “only” 19-3. I think what bothers me the most is that very few understand what goes into making a program as classy as this one work. It takes time, dedication, effort, love for the kids and the game, knowledge and hard work. How many of the nayseyers are willing to check grades and behavior for several dozen students on a daily basis? Add to that the preparation for practice and games. There are long and physically demanding practices and ,oh yeah, let’s throw in the wonderful and long bus rides.

Having been involved in all of this for over 30 years, I had the crazy idea that it was about the kids. The idea is to turn our young men and young women into good citizens. This is what they strive for at GDS. Coach Johnson and his terrific staff are as dedicated as we will see.

Very few understand what this demands of an individual for a full generation. How fortunate this community is to have had Coach Johnson for these years. As was stated a few days ago, I have watched this man helped many youngsters who never played for him advance their atletic and/or their academic careers. Please tell me how this benefits him personally. When the awards for being a special person are handed out he stands at the front of the line.

Let’s all trust that he will be around for many years to come. Greensboro will be well served.

  15. rcristal, Thats why he does it b/c he stands at the front of the line. A true leader stands at the back!!!!!! not saying he is not a leader but i never seen him outside the gym or riding down lawndale …..please tell where you guys get these things from???? all the the things you said freddy is doing all the other coaches are doing the same thing. he works at a private school let me go to a public school and coach or take all the players that reclass off his team and then lets see how good of a coach he is. i am not hating on the man, but it kills me to think he is the only good coach in greensboro that is builden i good program that works hard. look at the grimsley coach, look at coach kent, smith coach is doing a good job these are the coaches that really deserves the recrecognition the coaches that deal with kids that have real problems who parenats cant afford to send them to a GDS….. his coaching staff is not the best they are running the same plays since the 90″s they did not start winning entil they started reclassing players.

  16. All I can say is that you are wrong. He never stands at the front. He is a true leader. I know him and I know how the city programs work. Coach Johnson does most of what he does behind the scenes and I mean way behind the scenes.

To one of your points; I know a number of local high school coaches. Several are good friends. They do work hard and deserve great credit and thanks from all of us. I have no clue where you got the idea that I believe him to be the only good coach around. I worked for a few years coaching in the public school system and it is very difficult. My thanks to all of these guys.

  17. On a brighter note Quality Education vs O.R.M.A at bonner field house should be a great game this Friday.
