In his nearly two decades at the helm of the Western Alamance football program, Hal Capps turned the Warriors into powerhouse, winning a state title and becoming a playoff fixture.

On Monday morning, he announced that he was ready for a new challenge.

Capps informed his team that he was resigning to take the head coaching job at Mooresville High School.

“He’s meant a lot to the community,” Western Alamance athletics director Carter Gerlach said. “Everybody I’ve talked to has the utmost respect for him. … He’s a good friend; he’s going to be missed.”

In 18 seasons at Western Alamance, Capps turned the Warriors into a model of consistency, reaching the postseason 12 times — including an active streak of eight straight seasons — and the state championship game four times. He leaves the Warriors with a record of 168-69 with 15 winning seasons.

In 2007, after three straight state title game losses, Capps’ Warriors capped a 16-0 campaign with a 62-36 rout of North Gaston for the Class 3-A championship.

A Williams High School graduate, Capps played college football at Catawba before stints as an assistant coach at Lumberton and Eden Morehead.
