More on the hoops rewind as HP Andrews boys whip Central and Central girls win, but Coach Carter gets hurt

from Daniel Kennedy over at the High Point Enterprise and at www.hpe.com:

HIGH POINT – T. Wingate Andrews savored every last second of its 65-46 win over High Point Central. Chants of “Hey, hey, hey! Good bye!” were bellowed rhythmically Saturday night from the Andrews student section as Queen’s hit song “Another One Bites the Dust” blared from the loud speakers at the conclusion of the contest.

Forgive the Red Raiders for their exuberance. Central was trying to sweep Andrews for the first time in several seasons but it was Andrews dancing around the gym to celebrate its avenging a 59-50 loss in December.

“They beat us by nine, we came home and knew we had to step up,” said Raider guard Jalen Ford, who scored a team-leading 15 points. “We had another guard to go down (with injury), so I had to play a lot of minutes. When I get others into the game, it opens up the floor.”

Spreading the court was only the beginning for Andrews’ offense. The Raiders’ backcourt broke down the Bison defense with penetration and distributed the ball effectively.

Ford was just one of three players in double-figures for Andrews. Mark Johnson had 14 and Alex Smith pitched in 11.

“They stretched us out pretty good,” Bison coach Patrick Battle said. “They’re a pretty good basketball team, so when you give them good looks, they’re probably going to knock them down.”

Central (7-8, 4-2 Metro 4A) suffered the setback in large part due to the team’s inability to knock down their open shots. As opposed to the red-hot Raiders, the Bison struggled to get in sync offensively all night.

from Daniel Kennedy at www.hpe.com and in the Sunday High Point Enteprise:

HIGH POINT – High Point Central’s girls may have suffered the biggest loss while defeating T.W. Andrews 59-31 on Saturday night.

Bison head coach Kenny Carter suffered what is thought to be a torn Achilles tendon.

Carter was injured when he left his feet to yell something to one of his players and came down awkwardly on his foot.

As for the game, the Bison withstood an Andrews rally that cut a 26-16 halftime deficit down to as little as five.

“I think we just outlasted them,” Bison assistant coach Dwain Waddell said.

Andrews coach Weaver Walden thoroughly enjoyed himself for most of the game.

His Red Raiders came out in the opening minutes and forged ahead to a 5-0 lead by executing a plan to slow the game and keep the ball away from Central’s offense.

  1. Could be academics and if so with the new rules in place it would be for the remainder of the season, Gone.

I heard of one kid that was off and he was allowed back on and they said he could stay unitl January 28….Not sure if that is the day the report cards go out or what?????

  2. Brittney Gwynn – It’s was academics; don’t know when she will be allowed back on the team. Coach Cook, atheletic director at HPC is doing his job and following the new GCS rules put in place for athletes.

  3. She’s a great player & I’m sure she will be missed for what ever length of time. Also, I think the academic rules should be followed. She probably won’t be the only one either, guess we’ll know more in the coming days.
