Atticus Lum 12 rebounds

Bishop overcame a slow start to win a game the team dedicated to Jill
Lawler, the mother of Bishop’s Pit Crew (Student Section) leader, Thomas
Lawler, who dresses as a hot dog at all the Villains games. Jill Lawler
lost her battle with cancer Monday afternoon and passed away, and the
Villain basketball team wore ‘Lawler’ shirts during the warm up and
dedicated the game to her memory.

After a slow first half, the Bishop Boys exploded in the third quarter
playing inspired basketball, forcing 7 turnovers and capitalizing on each
one to go on a 12- 2 run to open the quarter. Marty Defrancesco and Josh
Rathburn both hit three pointers during the stretch and it was capped off by
a steal and layup by Josh Rathburn to end the third quarter. Key plays in
the third on the defensive end by Toomey and superb rebounding by Atticus
Lum (12 overall, 10 in second half) pushed the Villains to the 12 point
lead going into the fourth quarter. Toomey connected with his teammates for
a season high 10 assists in the game.

Bishop faces West Stokes on Tuesday in Kernersville in a battle for second
place in the conference behind Winston Salem Prep.

Bishop 13-5, 7-3
Surry Central 11- 7, 7-5

  1. wow HUGE win for gds. didnt see that coming as most people have trinity christian in the top 5 in nc regardless of class and public/private. anyone at the game? how did trinity’s demontre harris play? he’s going be a gamecock and i’m a proud USC alum!!

  2. Another great game at GDS. Trinity was long and athletic. Probably the most athletic team I have seen this year. The kid going to South Carolina was pretty good. The guard Steadman was terrific. He made a huge, deep 3 to tie the score late in the game and send into overtime. All that being said, GDS once again played a team game and had a balanced scoring attack. They were down 5 in OT with 2 minutes left and Trinity had the ball. Kleinman had a huge and 1 to get it close. I think 4 guys ended up in double figures. Pulliam had a terriific game and WIlliams played well late after a terrible stsrt. Dorsett, Kleinman, Weavil, Terry, Roberts, and Robertson all had solid games as well. Looks like they are coming together at just the right time.

  3. GDS did it again. There is no way GDS should win that game as athletic and long that team was. Once again team is more impoortant than individuals. It is a pleasure watching GDS play on the defensive end. Those coaches get it all out of every one of those players. It would be dangerous for them to have the talent that Trinity Christian had. Congrats to all GDS players. Damien Steadman is a great athletic specimen asnd is definetely a D1 player.

  4. not drinking the GDS koolaid just yet…sorry. states are a long way off. this is the same team that dropped ugly ones to charlotte christian, ravenscroft, and westchester (just last week) at HOME and laid an egg against forsyth country day on the road. that’s 3 losses to teams they could face again to get a title.

gds is 1-3 against teams in their 3a ncisaa division. ONE WIN, THREE LOSSES. plus they didn’t show up on the biggest stage of the year so far for them, losing to northern in the pizza hut little 4 semi. anyone else still impressed?

  5. Definitely think winning the 3A state title for the Bengals is a long shot. I saw the Ravenscroft and Char Christian games. Think they are better than Ravens but not sure about Charlotte Christian. Looking like they are going to be a 4 or 5 seed in the state tourney. Prob will have to face Forsyth in the first round. If they can win that one then more than likely Christ School in the semis. Not one they should win. The only good thing going for them is that the States are here this year. If their guards make some shots then they are capable of beating most teams, but they are going to have to be much more consistent offensively to beat good teams on consescutive days.

  6. Wow Roger T. How about the fact that GDS is 7-3 in NCISAA 3A with all of their losses coming by 6 points or fewer. How about the fact that every single team they have lost to is ranked in the top 5 in the the state for their division whether it be public or private. GDS plays the toughest schedule in the area with the exception of Oak Ridge, which this year isn’t affiliated with any conference and has an Oak-Hill type of schedule…..(not to mention that GDS BEAT OAK RIDGE). I’d say all of that is pretty darn impressive.

  7. gds is 2-3 in their last 5 games. the last 5 games is the first time all year that the bengals have played against any decent competition over a significant stretch. and that stretch doesn’t compare to what they will see during states. they definitely don’t have any significant individual talent to speak of and (regardless of history) its hard to say they have been consistently well coached based on the second half of the season thus far. the only d1 prospect on the team is the seven footer they have failed to develop. not “hating”, the numbers dont lie.

  8. ROGER T YOU ARE CLUELESS, FIRST OF ALL THE 7’0 IS GETTING SO MUCH BETTER, HE CHANGED SO MANY SHOTS THE OTHER NIGHT AT THE NORTHERN GAME AND IF HE WAS AT ANY OTHER SCHOOL THEY WOULD NOT EVEN PLAY HIM. AS I THINK ABOUT IT WHY AM I WRITING THIS TO ROGER T I SHOULD NOT EVEN REPLY TO A RSPONSE THAT IS SO STUPID. YOU ARE CRAZY THE DAY SCHOOL SCHEDULE INCLUDES: RAVENSCROFT, NORTHERN (2) THERE NUMBER 1 IN 3A, CHRIST SCHOOL, OAKE RIDGE CHARLOTTE CHRISTIAN, WESTCHESTER, TRINITY CHRISTIAN, CANNON SCHOOL, AND THEY EVEN TRIED TO PLAY DUDLEY BUT DUDLEY WANT PLAY THEM. I KNOW I AM MISSING A FEW BUT HELL FORSYTH COUNTRY DAY, THAT IS 9 GAMES THEY HAVE PLAYED THAT ARE BETTER THAN ANYONE IN 4A. NOW ROGER SPEAK INTELLIGENTS NEXT TIME YOU SAY SOMETHING

  9. Chill crazy man!!!! You will give us all a bad name. Yes, we are good, but time will tell if we are the best.
I am going to play Coach K one on one on 1/30 to replace the GDS-Oak Ridge game. If I win, he promises not to ask us to play him at any school he coaches ever again. If he wins, Freddy has to come to Oak Ridge and coach his team for a week to give them some help.
    Sound fair?
