Marla Crawford – River Mill

River Mill point guard Marla Crawford set a new school record with 15 assists in a single game, against Cedar Ridge on January 12. The record surpassed the previous school record of 14 assists, held by 2009 NCPreps 1-A All-State selection Jada Alvarado.
Crawford; a 5′ 3″ freshman, has currently dished out 206 assists in 24 games this season, for an average of 8.58 per contest. Marla has also earned the reputation of being a good scorer (10.1 ppg.) and a tenacious defender. River Mill Coach Hamilton Perkins said, “Marla is very quick and extremely versatile. She has excellent court vision, a very good basketball IQ, and she; just like all of our players, is a valuable asset to our team. She definitely has a bright future ahead of her!”
When asked about establishing the new assist mark and to comment about her versatility, Crawford responded, ” When my teammates get to their spots and get open, I love getting the ball to them! Our coach stresses a total team effort, so everybody works hard. Out there on the court, we just try to take advantage of what the defense gives us. When they guard me closely, it opens things up for them. If they’re being guarded tight, it leaves me open.”
She has helped lead the Lady Jaguars to a 21-4 overall record. (All four losses were to 4-A teams.) River Mill has also garnered an 11-0 record in the Carolina 9 2-A/1-A Conference. Crawford’s immediate goals are for the team to qualify for the 1-A State Playoffs and make a deep playoff run.
Her future goals are to maintain excellent grades, improve upon her basketballs skills, and to eventually play in college. Marla is the daughter of Mark and Shelia Crawford.
This girl is a really good ball handler and distributor.
I thought she was a senior though. When Winston Salem Reynolds played River Mill in the Boo Williams Championship, she was listed in the program as a Senior.
