Guilford College’s “Shot Seen Round the World” 5th Anniversary

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Five years ago today Guilford College’s Jordan Snipes ’07 made one of the world’s the most publicized basketball shots. Snipes connected on an 85-foot, 5-inch buzzer-beater to lift the Quakers to a 91-89 overtime win at league-rival Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va..

Jordan Snipes – Shot Heard Round The World

Bill Voth of WRIC-TV captured the shot on videotape and it received national exposure via ESPN, CNN and numerous local affiliates. It lives on today thanks to the Internet and has been seen by millions of people worldwide. Last month, USA Today included the shot among its ‘Hoops Heroics’ entries in on-line voting for the top sports Web sensation of the decade.

The game-winning basket helped Guilford end a 12-game losing streak in the Yellow Jackets’ Crenshaw Gymnasium that dated to 1992. It came after Randolph-Macon’s Adam Krovic, who entered the game as the ODAC’s leading free-throw shooter (87%), made the first of two free throws with six-tenths of a second left in overtime. Krovic missed the second shot. Snipes corralled the rebound and threw a baseball pass the length of the floor into the Quakers’ basket for his sixth three-pointer of the game and an improbable victory. He scored a career- and game-high 34 points on nine-of-12 shooting from the floor, including six-of-seven from three-point range.

Snipes finished his career as a 1,000-point scorer and all-region and All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference performer for the Quakers. He still ranks among the school’s career leaders in three-pointers, assists and steals. The Jordan-Matthews High School graduate earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Guilford in 2007. He works for a tobacco company in Greensboro, where he lives with his wife, Jackie.
