Piedmont holds back Quakers down in Georgia

DEMOREST, Ga. – Jared Vermilya hit a two-run single in the first and Kevin McConnelly followed with a two-run homer to help Piedmont College past Guilford College, 6-2, in a non league baseball game Monday. The four-run
first was enough support for six Lions pitchers, who combined to fan 11 Quakers and allow just four hits.

Zach Kunz added a solo homer in the third inning for Piedmont (1-1), which gained a spilt of the season-opening series. Teammate John Duke had two hits
and an RBI. Starter Dusty Black (1-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings.

Guilford (1-1) scored both runs in the eighth inning thanks to Derek Hardison’s RBI double and a run-scoring ground out by Kent Peterson. Starting pitcher Sammy Stuart (0-1) allowed four runs in four innings to
take the loss.

The Quakers are scheduled to play Christopher Newport University Saturday(2/13) at 2:30 p.m. as part of the USA South Athletic Conference/Old Dominion Athletic Conference Challenge in Ashland, Va.
