Chuck Henderson, the son of legandary Western Guilford coach Doug Henderson, has been named the new head football coach at Asheboro High School, replacing Dee Bulla a Guilford College-grad, who resigned as football coach at AHS at the end of last season.

Doug Henderson coached the Western Guilford Hornets to the State 3-A football title back in 1977 and he was inducted into the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.

ASHEBORO — Last Oct. 23, Ledford High School football coach Chuck Henderson brought his Panthers to Lee J. Stone Stadium to battle the Asheboro High School Blue Comets. After the first half, Henderson saw his team fall behind by 13 points, barely able to move the ball against the AHS defense.

But after a halftime that featured numerous adjustments, Ledford fought back, shut out the Blue Comets and went on to record a 21-13 victory.

Now Henderson will be making those adjustments for the Blue Comets.

Henderson was named the head football coach at AHS Tuesday, succeeding Dee Bulla, who resigned after two seasons to devote more time to the athletic director position. Henderson was one of seven candidates interviewed.

“Coach Henderson brings with him a passion for the game of football,” said AHS Principal Kemper Fitch. “His structured, organized approach to coaching, teaching and life will lead the way for the student-athletes of AHS to know what it takes to be successful on the field and in life. He has demonstrated ability to set high expectations for his players and then help them meet or exceed those expectations. He will be a great addition to the Blue Comet family.”

Henderson said he is looking forward to the challenge.

“It’s a throwback of sorts,” Henderson said of Asheboro High School, which funnels players in from two middle schools. “All the kids in the city look forward to going to Asheboro High School and playing football. It’s not like they go to middle school and then go to two or three different places. It’s like that town shuts down on Friday nights. I like that and it’s a new challenge.”

A 1988 graduate of Western Guilford, Henderson played under his father, Doug Henderson, a recent inductee into the Guilford County Hall of Fame. While at WGHS, he played against some very talented Asheboro teams that included Timmy Woodle and Elliott Armstrong. Henderson earned the North Carolina teaching Fellows Scholarship and attended the University of North Carolina.

He began his coaching career at North Davidson, where he was an assistant coach, working with defensive backs, quarterbacks and working his way to the offensive coordinator position. He was also the head track coach at NDHS.

In 1998, he moved to High Point Central, where he we worked with the defensive line and quarterbacks, until 2003, when he was named the head coach at Ledford High School. He’s been there ever since, including finishing with a 6-6 record last year after a first-round loss in the state playoffs.

  1. Congrats Chuck! I played for your dad and if you only learned 10% from him, I sure you’ll do an excellent job in your new position, but I’ve got a feeling you learned way more than that.
