This event is an excellent opportunity for athletes to foster international goodwill and friendship among nations while also promoting the game. With the exception of the US Olympic program, there are few opportunities for athletes to experience the competition, history and culture of other countries on an international level. Established in 1992, USA Athletes International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to giving amateur athletes such an opportunity.

William A. Edington, Executive Director of USA Athletes International, has extended an official invitation to be part of the team to Saegan Hilliard of Asheboro High School. Saegan has been a four year varsity player for the Asheboro Blue Comets coached by Brian Nance. As a junior, Hilliard was selected as Courier-Tribune Christmas All-Tournament , Courier-Tribune All Randolph County , Mid-Piedmont 3A All Conference, NC Preps 3A All State, and the 2009 recipient of Asheboro High School’s “Distinguished Athlete Award.” As a senior, Hilliard has led the Comets to a 14-7 record and a battle for second place in the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference. He was selected again to the Courier-Tribune Christmas All-Tournament team and is currently among the leaders listed on NC Preps in scoring, 3 point field goals and assists. He recently scored his 1,000th point for the Comets. Over his last 48 consecutive games since the start of his junior season for the Comets, Saegan has averaged 21 points per game.

Hilliard is Asheboro High School’s Wendy’s High School Heisman winner, member of the National Honor Society, and carries a 4.5 GPA in the classroom. He is the son of Larry and Cindy Hilliard and a member of Cross Road Baptist Church in Asheboro.
