Guilford men win by eleven in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior Tyler Sanborn scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to rally fourth-ranked Guilford College past Washington and Lee University, 91-80, Monday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference(ODAC) basketball action.

The Quakers (21-2, 12-2 ODAC) dropped three places in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, which was released Monday night. Washington and Lee drops to 15-8 (7-7 ODAC) with the loss.

The Quakers’ Clay Henson added 15 of his 21 points in the second stanza as Guilford overcame a 45-38 halftime deficit and posted its 14th come-from-behind win of the season.

The Generals’ Ben Goetch scored 10 of his team-high 19 points and Washington and Lee drained eight first-half three-pointers to build the lead. Guilford netted the second half’s first six points and took the lead with 13:15 left in regulation on a Rhett Bonner three-pointer. The lead changed hands six times over the next seven minutes before Clay Henson’s lone three-pointer of the game with 6:13 remaining put Guilford ahead for good, 68-67.

Henson’s three triggered a 7-0 Guilford spurt that opened an eight-point margin with just under four minutes to play. Washington and Lee drew no closer than six points in the final minutes as Henson and Josh Pittman combined to make 14 free throws in the final 1:34.

Sanborn made 10-of-11 shots from the floor and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for his 20th double-double of the year. Martin Stephenson matched his season high with 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Teammate Rhett Bonner made three three-pointers and finished with 12 points, along with Pittman, who scored nine in the second half. The Quakers corralled 12 offensive rebounds, which led to 19 second-chance points.

Goetch added a team-high seven rebounds and four assists to his 19 points in 32 minutes. He was four-for-seven from beyond the arc to lead a Washington and Lee shooting effort that drained 13 threes. Zac White tallied 16 points, three blocks and three steals for the Generals.
