Travis Starbuck paces Guilford College Quakers’ baseball win at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – Guilford College scored five runs in the second inning and
five pitchers combined on a six-hit shutout in the Quakers’ 5-0 baseball
victory at Averett University Sunday afternoon.

Travis Starbuck had two hits for Guilford (2-1), including an RBI single in
the second inning. Jordan Nelson also had an RBI in the frame, which saw
Guilford scored three runs with two outs and twice off of wild pitches. Drew
Ward also had two hits for the Quakers.

Both teams stranded nine runners, with Averett (2-2) leaving a man on third
in both of the first two innings against Adam Hart. Sammy Stuart threw the
next two innings for Guilford before giving way to rookie Will James (1-0),
who picked up his first college win by tossing scoreless fifth and sixth
innings.

James gave way to Will Simpson in the seventh inning and Simpson worked
around a one-out double by James Carter in the seventh and left two Cougars
on base. He threw a perfect eighth inning and Michael Blocher struck out the
side for Guilford in the ninth.

Adam Higgins paced Averett’s offense with two hits.
