Northwest 18 12 8 18 – 56
Ragsdale 16 8 11 18 – 53

The fourth time was the charm for the Northwest Vikings as they defeated the regular season Piedmont Triad Champion Ragsdale Tigers in the finals of the Conference Tournament. Northwest had dropped the first three meetings between the two rivals, but exacted revenge by a 56 – 53 score.

In a well played and tightly contested game, the two teams stayed fairly even until the very end. Ragsdale got down by 5 late in the game and had to foul in an attempt to make a comeback, but the Vikings went 11 – 13 from the charity stripe in the fourth to preserve the win. Ragsdale relied too much on the outside shot in
tonight’s game and were unable to get to the basket. They got cold from outside in the fourth which led to their defeat.

Northwest only had four players score in tonight’s game, but it was enough as Kyle Vebber scored 22 including 6 – 7 from the foul line in the fourth. Zachary Ellwood had 15 (5 -5 from the line in the 4th) and Reed Lucas had 14.

Ragsdale was led by Tyquan Roberts with 17, Benaiah Wise with 12 and Kalik Parker with 11. All three of the leading scorers for the Tigers had 3 treys as Ragsdale
was throwing them up from long range tonight.

Northwest turned their season around in February after suffering 5 consecutive defeats during January. The Northwest faithful were up in arms, pointing fingers at
everyone. Coach Manny Bloom did a great job in rallying his troops and they have now gone 5 – 1 heading into the State playoffs. With the win tonight, the Vikings get the 2nd seed from the Piedmont Triad and get a home game in the first round.

  1. Congrats to the NW boys! This is some well deserved vindication for the players and Coach Bloom and his staff. Good luck in the states. Maybe it is time for the naysayers to get on board and support the team. Real fans don’t cut the team and coaches down during a rough patch.

  2. Way to go Vikings! There will always be naysayers but enjoy the glory, you deserve it. They played a great game and finally got a win from Ragsdale. Good luck on the rest of your season!

  3. Proud of the young men on the NW Vikings. They have kept their heads up after the close losses and are now clicking on all cylinders going into the States. Keep working as a team Vikings and you will go far. Congrats on the Division Tourney Championship!!!
