The Greensboro Day School Bengal defense was the difference tonight, as GDS defeated North Raleigh Christian 51-33, at the Dillard Athletic Center on Lawndale Drive.
This game moved quickly and it was all said and done by 7:11pm and that made the Time of Game(TOG) 1:11 since this one got started at 6pm…..One hour and eleven minutes and the Bengals are on their way to meeting #3, with the Furies from Forsyth Country Day, at GDS on Thursday night at 8:30. FCD has won the two previous meetings during this 2009/2010 season.
The games are all a part of the NCISAA(North Carolina Independent Schools Atheltic Association) 3-A boys basketball tournament, with the GDS Bengals entering as a #5 seed and the FCD Furies are seeded #4, with Ravenscroft #3, Charlotte Christian #2 and the Christ School from Arden/Asheville, the #1 seed….
GDS will get another chance at Forsyth Country Day, coached by former Wake Forest Demon Deacon and Jerry Stackhouse’s cousin Craig Dawson. GDS will also face one of the state’s top point guards in young Tyler Lewis, a sophomore backcourt ace for the Furies….
Tonight against North Raleigh Christian, the GDS Bengals employed assistant coach and defensive instructor Jeff Smith’s trapping defense to perfection and they hit the max on defense, by only allowing 2 NRC points in the 3rd quarter, after watching NCR cut the lead to 7(28-21), at the half….
The suffocating Bengal defense caused the NRC guards to collapse and they could not breathe when Coach Smith’s defense hit them, with three men attacking the one man(NRC guard) with the ball and when the guard made his next pass it was 4 times out of five, right into the hands of a Day School Bengal and GDS was off to the basket with more points off of turnovers, caused by Coach Smith’s suffocating “D”…
North Raleigh Christian played right into GDS’s hands, but it wasn’t that way early as the team from Raleigh kept it very close in the first half and they played nearly even with GDS through most of the early stages of the game….The game was at 25-21 GDS, right before the Bengals hit a three-pointer to go up 28-21 at halftime…..
As we mentioned, the 3rd quarter defense was the difference-maker and from that point on it was all Greensboro Day, in this 1 hour and 11 minute game and in the 4th quarter with about 2:30 remaining, Andrew Magod, Michael Tuck, and the Bengal reserves began to close this one out….
Again, Greensboro Day School gets the Round One victory, 51-33 over North Raleigh Christian….Halftime…GDS 28, NRC 21…3rdQ GDS 38, NRC 23……

Good effort after a sluggish start for the Bengals. NRC actually had whoever the center was guarding to be the PG to try and stay out of the GDS traps. After some adjusting the D shut down NRC. I was surprised that when GDS went zone in second half that NRC held the ball even though they were down 10+ points. Was like the coach was trying to stay within the spread or something bazaar like that. All in all a solid first round effort. The big kid Roberts made a few shots tonight as well which was nice to see.
Who was the about 6’4 kid on the bench tonight. Even though he didn’t play, I have never seen him before. Any Answers?
Trey Chapman. He is a freshman and played JV this season.

I have only seen them play a few times. He played around the basket and was pretty active. Not sure if he will be able to play inside next year since they have all their post players back. Not sure how he is on perimeter.
