CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Garrett Davis(CB Aycock HS and beat SEG HS in 3-A State Championship in 2007) pitched a career-high five innings to record his first career victory over UNC Greensboro 12-2 Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels bashed 16 hits as nine different Carolina hitters hit safely in the win. No. 11 North Carolina improves to 4-0 while UNC Greensboro falls to 3-1 on the year.

The Tar Heels stranded 11 base runners, but still managed to score in all but two innings. Six different players stole a base Tuesday, including Levi Michael(North Davidson) who swiped two, en route to a season-high seven stolen bases.

Davis (1-0) allowed two runs on two hits in five innings. Zach Bernard, Chris Munnelly(Forsyth Country Day), R.C. Orlan, Greg Holt(West Forsyth) and Cody Penny all pitched in relief – all rendering no runs.

Davis was impressive early, striking out four Spartan batters in his first three innings pitched while allowing no hits.

The Tar Heels tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the third – as the Spartans used two different pitchers in the frame. Ben Bunting(Randleman HS) laced his second single of the day to knock in Stallings, who reached on a double to right center. Hazlett added another RBI single, while Brian Goodwin ripped his second triple in as many games scoring two more Tar Heel runs. The Diamond Heels flashed their speed in the third, stealing four bases – Michael, Coyle, Hazlett and Graepel all swiped bags.

UNC Greensboro ended Davis’ no hit-bid in the top of the fourth. A lead off walk issued to Lloyd Enzor followed by a towering two-run homer from Ed JayJack sliced the Tar Heel lead to three.

The Diamond Heels again added another run in the bottom of the fourth on new Spartan pitcher Wes McBride. Another RBI single from Hazlett scored Bunting in the bottom of the frame. The junior registered three RBI singles in his first three at-bats.
