Bishop faced conference foe East Sury for the third time this season in the
sectional semifinals. Bishop had won the previous two meetings. The
Villains jumped out to an early lead as East Surry started with a box-1
defense on Toomey, as Josh Rathburn caught fire from the perimeter canning 3
three pointers in the first period. Beind Rathburns 9 and Toomeys 6 along
with a trey from Trey Taum, the Villains held a 18-12 lead after the first
and never relinquished the lead. Tough play by East Surry’s Hunter Diamont
kept the game close for the Cardinals, who rallied behind Diamont and fellow
senior and all-conference point guard Matt Covington’s two late 3s in the
fourth quarter to cut the Villains lead to 5 with 1:30 to play. Bishop
would get layups from Steve Marrujo and Josh Ratburn, along with clutch FT
shoting by Toomey to finish off the game for the final margin.

Bishop will face Cherryville in the Sectional Finals in Cherryville on Friday at 7 PM. The Villains defeated Cherryville last year in a classic NCHSAA Western
Regional Final 73-72 en route to the 1A State title.

Bishop 18-10
East Surry 13-14
