Guilford falls 7-5 to Lynchburg, but Wooden hits another homer

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jeff Taylor went four-for-five with two doubles and two RBIs to help visiting Lynchburg College to a 7-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball win at Guilford College Saturday in both teams’ league opener.

Taylor had two-out RBI doubles in the Hornets’ (3-2, 1-0 ODAC) two-run third inning and three-run sixth that helped the guests build a 6-2 lead. Lynchburg starter Bryan Breedlove (2-1) scattered nine hits and yielded three earned runs before giving way to Conner Thompson in the seventh. Thompson worked out of a first-and-third, one-out jam by striking out Alex Starbuck and Kyle Wooden in the heart of Guilford’s lineup.

Guilford’s Derek Hardison hit a solo homer in the eighth and Travis Starbuck followed later in the inning with an RBI single to make it a 7-5 game. Thompson retired Guilford lead-off man Jordan Nelson and ended the inning on D.J. Phillips’ pop up to second. He led off the ninth by fanning Starbuck and Wooden for the second straight time and earned his first save of the season. Guilford (5-4, 0-1 ODAC) stranded five of its 10 runners left on base in the final three innings.

Guilford’s Wooden set a school record with his fifth home run in as many games, a two-run blast to left that made it a 3-2 game in the fourth inning. Guilford starter Adam Hart (3-1) fanned nine in five innings, but walked four and yielded seven hits.

Guilford and Lynchburg were scheduled to end the season series Sunday (2/28) with another nine-inning game, but poor field conditions postponed thecontest until April 14. The Quakers return to action Monday (3/1) versus Montreat College at 2:30 p.m.
