GREENSBORO, N.C. – Will Cornelius (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford)
homered in the bottom of the eighth to lift Guilford College past visiting
Montreat College, 5-4, in nonconference baseball action Monday. The senior
catcher also homered in the sixth, which tied the game at 4-4.

Cornelius’ blast made a winner out of sophomore Eric Backus for the first
time this season. The southpaw walked two in an inning and a third of relief
before yielding to Michael Blocher in the ninth. The Quakers’ closer
recorded the final two outs for his first save of 2010.

Guilford came back from deficits of 2-0 and 4-2 in the game. Cameron
Duckworth’s two-run homer in the fourth opened the game’s scoring and gave
the Cavaliers an early 2-0 lead. The Quakers tied it in the bottom of the
frame on Derek Hardison’s RBI double and a run-scoring single by D.J.
Phillips.

Drew Ward had an RBI double in the fifth inning for Guilford, one of the
Quakers’ five extra-base hits in the game.

Cameron Duckworth and Dustin Bartlett both had two hits for the Cavaliers,
who stranded 14 runners in the game.

Guilford hosts Immaculata College of Pennsylvania Wednesday at 1:00 p.m in a
nonleague doubleheader.

I remember watching Will Cornelius play at Northwest. He is a great young man who I believe also made the Dean’s list this past semester at Guilford college. Keep up the great work both in the classroom and on the field Will. Northwest is proud of your efforts.
