West Charlotte tops Dudley Panthers in West Regional at Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center

The Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center wasn’t feeling very special tonight as the Dudley Panthers fell to the West Chalotte Lions 69-68 in NCHSAA 4-A West Regionals.

FINALS:
West Charlotte 69
Dudley 68

Lake Norman 58
Ardrey Kell 56

*****Lake Norman and West Charlotte, both from the I-Meck Conference will meet for the West Regional championship on Saturday night at 6pm in the Coliseum Special Events Center….*****

Congratulations to West Charlotte and Lake Norman for making it to the Championship of the West Regional…..

In tonight’s game, Dudley was up 33-31 at the half and then trailed 50-46 at the end of three quarters. The Panthers had grabbed a lead of 43-34 in the third quarter before West Charlotte made their run….

Dudley went up 68-67 on two PJ Hairston free throws with just 8.5 seconds remaining in the ball game. West Charlotte had to go the length of the court and Julius Hamilton got the inbounds pass to Anthony Estes who drove the length of the court after catching that inbounds pass near the left sideline in the backcourt and then he made that now game-changing drive to the basket as he got into the lane and banked a shot home as he went up and into two Panther defenders and as we were saying, the shot stayed down on the banker from straight down the lane and West Charlotte moved in front to stay, 69-68, with now just 1.8 seconds left on the clock after what proved to be Anthony Estes game-winner……

Dudley tried a long pass with the 1.8 on the clock after the referees finally decided how much time should still be on the clock and the Panthers tried a long pass for PJ Hairston that went all the way upcourt and out of bounds with no one touching the ball, so West Charlotte got the ball back up on their end under their own bucket and after a couple of passes that were knocked out by Dudley, the Lions made one long pass into the backcourt that was touched and it went out of bounds and the clock expired and the game and the season were over…..

Dudley’s top scorers:
PJ Hairston 25 points
Reggie Dillard 14
Brennan Wyatt 9
Jaquel Richmond 9
Sam Hunt 6

West Charlotte top scorers:
JT Terrell 20 points
Brandon Richardson 18
Jacoby Davis 16
Anthony Estes 11 points and none bigger than the last shot he took and hit as he drove down the middle of the lane with 1.8 seconds remaining….

West Charlotte 69

  1. That’s a pretty tough loss to take by all those involved with the game tonight and with Jim Modlin and Dennis White helping out on the radio broadcast from the Coliseum, I say thanks to them and hopefully Dudley will make another run next season in PJ Hairston’s senior year…..

Again, we still have the Northern Guilford and Northeast Guilford boys in the hunt in the 3-A’s and let’s hope they find success and victories at ECU tomorrow night or tonight(Thursday) as the clock heads past midnight again and it is time for me to hit the road…..

Maybe someone will get some needed info from these reports and it has been fun and a good run following the teams this season from here at the web site…It will be sort of hard to wind down tonight, but the show must go on….

    I’m out.

  2. The refs in my opinion mess up a call in the last 40 seconds when Dudley was up 3. West Charlotte attempted a shot, missed and the ball went out of bounds off a WC player, but the Refs, called it off of Dudley, the next playWC hit a big three to knot it back up. But with that said, both teams laid it on the line and kept coming back at each other. WC hit there foul shots, Dudley missed some key foul shots.

I really felt this was Dudley year to get back to the championship game after a 4yr lay off (2005-2006) season. But like the football team learned, you can’t let teams hang around you, because anything can happen late in a game to turn it around.

If PJ to work on a inside/ mid range shot, Cyburn builds some upper body strength and Reggie continues to grow, Dudley will learn from this and win it all next year running away.

Good luck to Northern or N.E. down in Greenville tonight !!!

  3. what i saw was some poor shot selection especially on the 3’s—-the refs were a little better at not falling for the “flop” on the 3 point attempt—2 very exciting 4a boys games, and a fan cannot ask for more in my opinion. i will say that one call no matter what did not affect the final outcome of this game—the 4a boy’s final should be a good one!

  4. This was a very tough loss to take. The officiating was not the best in the world. I still say you don’t let anyone drive the length of the court in the final 8 seconds to hit the game winner right in front of the rim.

PJ has tried to shoot himself out of his 3 point shooting slump for the last 2 – 3 weeks. His outside shot was not there. But I did like the way he posted up and got his points. Dudley rebounded the ball much better than it has most of the season. Everyone crashed the boards all night long.

Looking at the Dudley roster, we will be loaded again next season. We need to find a couple of point guards to replace Wyatt and Manuel. And if a ‘BIG MAN” comes along Dudley will be an outstanding team.

  5. As I look closer at the photo by Joseph Rodriguez in today’s News and Record and on-line at the N&R site, that looks like a tough final shot by Anthony Estes and very good defense by Stephon Redd from Dudley, but where is the call?????

That is either a charge or a block…..Redd’s arms are straight up in the air like they are supposed to be and his feet are set and Estes is barrelling right into him….

If the feet were not square and set then I guess it was block. With Estes flying in there that hard and fast you think that play couldn’t go as a “No Call”…..

Being a homer, after looking at the N&R photo, I would say it was a charge. Redd played excellent defense all night long and he made several hustle plays to get loose balls. I was very impressed with Stephon Redd’s readiness and his effort and to me that last play was mighty close.

If I study that play from my computer on East Lee Street, then that was a charge on Estes……

  6. Yes it was a painful loss to witness, to get so close to the Championship prize after a long season to come up short is heartbeaking for anybody. Even though it not life or death, it hurts to place so much of time and effort into a kraft/ skill and have come up short. Dudley had a Great season ( other teams in the triad did too), so as a whole it was a wonderful, exciting season, but watching your team or as a player, season end like that can a lot out of a person (4real).

It took alot of time to get over the way Dudley’s football team loss……Now the basketball team too. But time will heal and a new season will come again with high hopes…(smile)
