Tough Saturday for Greensboro College at Shenandoah

Winchester, VA — Shenandoah University defeated Greensboro College, 4-1, on Saturday. GC hard-luck starter Michael Manfro (Fauquier, VA/Notre Dame Academy) allowed no earned runs but took the defeat.

The Pride scored in the first inning. Matt Irwin (Asburn, VA/Stone Bridge) led off the game with a double. He later scored on a Murray Smith (Williston, SC/Williston-Elko High School) ground out.

GC held the 1-0 lead until the sixth inning when SU plated its four unearned runs. The Hornets used three hits and two Pride errors to tally its runs. Manfro allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked three.

SU ace Greg Van Sickler pitched eight innings and scattered six hits. He fanned three Pride hitters and walked one.

GC’s Grant Kelley (Newport, NC/West Cartret High School) and Tyler O’Neill (Columbia, Md/Oakland Mills) both collected two hits. SU improved to 6-3 and 1-2 in the USAS and The Pride is 4-7, 0-3.
