GREENSBORO, N.C. — Durand Scott scored 11 of his 17 points in the final six minutes and last-place Miami continued a stunning run in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament with a 70-65 victory over Virginia Tech on Friday.
DeQuan Jones added 14 points for the 12th-seeded Hurricanes (20-12), who had lost 11 of 14 games coming into the postseason. They advanced to Saturday’s semifinals against top seed and No. 4 Duke.
Jeff Allen scored 18 points for fourth-seeded Virginia Tech, which couldn’t overcome a miserable performance by ACC leading scorer Malcolm Delaney. He was held to seven points on 3-of-15 shooting, including 0-of-8 from 3-point range.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -Iman Shumpert scored 14 points and made the key defensive play that lifted Georgia Tech past No. 19 Maryland 69-64 on Friday night in the Atlantic Coast Conference quarterfinals.
Maurice Miller added 13 points for the seventh-seeded Yellow Jackets (21-11). They blew most of a 19-point lead and had 25 turnovers, but for the second straight night, they did just enough to advance – this time, to the semifinals for the first time since 2005.
Greivis Vasquez had 17 points on 6 of 21 shooting for the second-seeded seed Terrapins (23-8). They had the ball and were within one possession of the lead six times in the final 4:30 and didn’t score on any of those possessions.
The last chance came when Maryland trailed 67-64 and Vasquez pulled up for a long 3-pointer with about 6 seconds left. Shumpert knocked the ball from his hands, took off downcourt and was fouled. He and Derrick Favors each hit one free throw in the final 3.7 seconds to seal the Yellow Jackets’ first victory in the series since 2004.

GREENSBORO, N.C.– Scott Wood looked like he couldn’t miss – again – against Florida State. Then NC State’s star player came through with his biggest basket on a tough night.
And just like that, Sidney Lowe’s Wolfpack is making another surprise run in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
Wood scored 18 points on six 3-pointers to help NC State beat the Seminoles 58-52 in Friday night’s quarterfinals, sending the Wolfpack back to the semifinals for the first time since that memorable run to the championship game in Lowe’s first season three years ago.
Tracy Smith added 13 points for the 11th-seeded Wolfpack (19-14), including that critical jumper to beat the shot clock with about a minute left. NC State next faces seventh-seeded Georgia Tech, which upset No. 19 Maryland earlier Friday in the latest addition to an upset-filled two days in Greensboro.
With the third-seeded Seminoles (22-9) out, it marked the first time in 17 years that three of the top four seeds were eliminated before the semifinals and also the first time in tournament history that the bottom two seeds – 12th-seeded Miami is also still alive – have reached the semifinals. Only fourth-ranked and top-seeded Duke is left among the high seeds.
“I’ve been seeing all the highlights of the games and what it seemed like was all the lower seeds are coming out on top,” Wood said. “I kind of didn’t want to let them all down. That’s just one thing that I noticed and it shows the lower seeds are probably been wanting it a little bit more, and I think that’s how it should be.”
Wood torched the Seminoles in the first meeting and followed up with another hot-shooting performance against a team that featured the top two vote-getters on the league’s all-defensive team. The freshman’s six 3s Friday were the most ever by an NC State player in the tournament.
Wood scored a season-high 31 points and hit seven 3s in the first meeting, an 88-81 road win for the Wolfpack in January.
“He’s one of the best shooters in the NCAA, I think,” senior Dennis Horner said. “When he’s hot, he’s hot. Unfortunately, Florida State’s been on the other end of it.”

We had Don covering that game for us and with him being a UNC-Chapel Hill grad, I would think you could understand all the anguish that Don Moore was feeling as that game ended.
It was the end of many different things, and with all the deaths that we have been reporting here this week, I would not want to see another added to that long list.
Bryan Adrian, Merlin Olsen, Sandy Scott, the very tragic stroke that Mike Hogewood suffered just last summer….

We also did not have the N.C. State-Clemson result for you as Don’s favorite uncle attended Clemson and he used to pump gas on the weekends at the Esso Club….

Leaving out NCSU’s big win was just a convenient way to excuse the absence of a write up of UNC’s loss. Plus, you guys hate NC State and have gone to great lengths to disparage Lowe’s lack of success.

Right and I waited until about 12:30am or till 12:45 and they never put anything up on N.C. State at either ACC.Com or at espn.com…..
