GUILFORD’S TYLER SANBORN NAMED SOUTH REGION PLAYER OF THE YEAR;
Clay Henson Earns Second-Team All-South Honor
**Greensboro, N.C. – *Guilford College’s *Tyler Sanborn (Mount Airy,
N.C./Elkin) *collected his second straight D3hoops.com South Region Player
of the Year Award Tuesday. Quakers have won the honor four straight seasons
as *Ben Strong ’08 *captured the prize in 2007 and 2008. Guilford’s *Clay
Henson (Glen Alpine, N.C/Freedom) *earned Second Team All-South recognition
from the Web site.
The all-region nominations and selections are made by NCAA Division III
sports information directors from across the country. There were 676
students nominated nationwide, a new high. The ballot was made available to
sports information directors, who voted for 10 six frontcourt players and
four backcourt players from their region. First and second-team all-region
picks are eligible for selection to the Web site’s All-America teams, which
will be announced later this week.
A 6-9 senior center, *Sanborn *received the Old Dominion Athletic
Conference’s (ODAC) 2010 Kurt Axe Men’s Basketball Player of the Year honor
and averages a career-high 19.6 points per game. He leads the ODAC and ranks
third nationally with 14.1 rebounds per contest. *Sanborn* stands ninth in
Division III with an ODAC-best .643 field-goal percentage. He has a
league-leading 29 double-doubles and 17 games of 20 or more points. A 2009
D3hoops.com Fourth Team All-American and two-time First Team All-ODAC
selection, *Sanborn* became Guilford’s sixth men’s basketball player to
compile 1,000 points and rebounds in his career. He stands 16th among the
Quakers’ career scoring leaders (1,371) and fourth in career rebounds
(1,120). *Sanborn *was twice named to the 2009-10 Scoutware D3hoops.com Team
of the Week and earned ODAC Player of the Week honors three times this
season. He has averaged 20.5 points and 17.5 rebounds in the Quakers’ four
NCAA tournament wins this season.
*Henson*, a 6-2 senior guard, averages 17.9 points per game and has set the
school records for three-pointers (95) and three-point attempts (255) in a
season. A First Team All-South pick in 2009, he won one ODAC Player of the
Week honor this season and ranks second in the conference with a 1.79
assist-to-turnover ratio. He has two 30-point games on the year and made
eight three-pointers in both contests, one shy of his school record.* Henson
*has 1,700 career points, which ranks ninth in school history, and holds the
Guilford standards for three-pointers made (284) and attempted (762). His
122 career games ranks second in school history and he stands fifth among
Guilford’s career assists (326) and steals (119) leaders.
Coach *Tom Palombo’s *Quakers (30-2) are ranked third in the current
D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll and have recorded the second-highest win total in
school history. Guilford plays second-ranked Williams College Friday (3/19)
at 5:00 p.m. in an NCAA Division III Tournament semifinal game in the Salem
(Va.) Civic Center. The winner advances to play either Randolph-Macon
College or the University of Wisconsin -Stevens Point for the Division III
national title Saturday (3/20) at 1:00 p.m. in Salem.
