March Just Plain Silliness – 96 and no NIT

As we mentioned last year, the NCAA is planning to shop their TV rights to the Mens Basketball Tournament. Now we know why. 96 teams completing and no NIT.

The NCAA bought the NIT and this was probably its last game last night.

Next Step, renegotiate TV rights for 96 games. Opening week would be a massive play-in round. Games would continue through the weekend, making the early playoff games almost continuous. That alone eliminates CBS from the mix as they would not be willing to pay for the additional games at the risk of obligating more nights to sports.

We will see. We have a few more months before the NCAA can decide. The TV contract opening closes July 31, after that the NCAA can’t do much about changes.

  1. we’d still have hat tournament that ASU played in, and we’d still have the WOMEN’s NIT

  2. At least UNX did not win the LAST NIT although the officials did their best to help them.

  3. less than 10,000 in the worlds most famous arena. maybe is time for the NIT to end.

  4. No way. If they chloroform the NIT it give life to the CBI, Cinsider and whatever fly-by-nights emerge. NCAA will keep NIT.
